Never saw this issue with Ubuntu 12.04 and 14.04 on my several ThinkPads R61 14", R61 15", R61E 15" and R400 14".... Nor with any of my Macs, here, 2007, 2008 and 2009 machines BUT Ubuntu 16.04 gives this Wi-Fi disabled hardware switch thing on ALL my ThinkPads. But NOT on any of my my Macs. I perceive a Broadcom Card issue with 16.04 Cannot prove that, just empirical observations None of the "FIXES" seen on YT or with Google & Bing searches. Have worked for me Screwing around from a Terminal is asking for trouble. J.C.
