I figured out an easy fix for the handle drooping like that. You just need to open the front leather snap tab, lead it through the grab handle and close the snap tab so it pulls the grab handle forward. If you hold it like that for a few days or maybe just even overnight, the handle should readjust itself.

The placket has to be reinforced, since the main fabric, the waffle fabric is too much susceptible to stretching. The additional fabric is a webbing that fixates the placket flaps so these are both stiffer and keep their length over time. Basically what I want to say is that you cannot do it without any additional reinforcement, but sure is neatly done. Thanks for the review, the message is more important than the packaging, so surely is a good concept, those quick takes.

Going from Rene Herse to Schwalbe Marathon Plus... I'd rather fix flats regularly than ride a tyre that's about as inspiring as concrete, but that's just me. My experiences with Marathons is that there's a lot of hype behind them, but as a local bike shop mechanic when I see them fail, they fail good and properly, often without warning. Instances include the wire beads poking through the sidewalls or just rattling around inside their casing. For heavy duty commuting tyres I'd recommend spending about half as much money and going for a Kenda Khan. My favourite inexpensive tyre is the Kenda K-Rad though, it's light and supple but I've had far fewer punctures on a K-Rad than the Maxxis DTHs I ran prior.

Well, if I have problems with these Schwalbe’s I’ll take your advice. I’ve had a lot of good luck with Kenda in the past. This bike is for business. I ride it slow, sub 20mph over 90% of the time and I use it for work. I’m not looking for inspiration, I’m looking for reliable transportation. When I’m on the clock I don’t have time to waste fixing my third flat of the week. If you want to see the bike I built for inspiration, see my 1991 Stumpjumper series.

I bought the journeyman on a trip to DC at one of their stores. I wore it one time. ONE TIME. I tried to return it immediately after because the straps did not fit comfortably for long-term wear. I'm a woman, I have no idea if that is part of the issue but the bag sags even when the straps are at their tightest and it's uncomfortable. I told Filson that I had worn the item. I was very clear about the situation. I sent the bag back. They sent it back to me saying it was not saleable because it was worn. Yeah I told them that. I contacted customer service again because I can't beleive that a $500 bag isn't returnable after 1 use. I was denied again. They say it's their 'policy'. WTF kinda policy is that? They don't care at all about customer satisfactions. So yes I have a very expensive, cool looking, uncomfotable bag that I can't travel with as planned. I will never spend money with them again.

Weird. I’ve returned worn items before more than once but this was in person at the flagship store. Never had a problem. I’ve noticed a lot has changed with Filson the last couple years. Outsourcing, moving what little US manufacturing they have left to CA. More frequent sales, the outlet online, unfailing, etc…

Great review! It is nice to see a comparison between some of the different colors. My late grandfather gifted me a red one of these shirts for my 18th birthday, and around 15 years later, it's still one of my favorite shirts to wear. It has a uniquely tight weave that I haven't found in any other garment. It's made in El Salvadore though, whereas it seems like most are coming out of Sri Lanka these days, according to the internet. I'm interested in getting another one in dark heather gray for a more neutral look. That is, if the quality is still the same.

A week after getting my watchcap, I bit the bullet and got my AAJ. no regrets there. One thought I had while watching is, what if weatherwool offered a "hotter" and "cooler" cap option with a looser and tighter knit. Down here in San Antonio, it's already too hot for mine but I still love to wear it because it looks amazing. If they had a cooler option I'd be able to wear it further into the year (and start wearing it earlier in the year)

I've tried applying Barbour Thornproof wax (the stuff in a tin that you melt and apply with a brush) to G-1000 with reasonable results. It's a softer and more classy finish than a bar wax and a little better at waterproofing the material. Since G-1000 is 2/3 polyester it's never going to achieve as good a result as 100% cotton since polyester is only going to get coated with wax rather than actually absorbing it.
@PsychologAlexeyLukin5 ай бұрын
This jacket can be impregnated with wax and it will be water and windproof. But it will breathe better than a membrane. And the fabric is much stronger. I didn't like Gore-Tex, there is no breath in it. G-1000 is good in light wind and rain. At the same time it breathes well. Gore tex can be worn in a storm. Unless you're working on a fishing boat in the North Sea, the fjall is a pretty good everyday jacket. And for comfort, you can put something under it, fleece, a puffer, a sweater.

I appreciate that you didn't knock the product, just openly stated that you don't quite understand the point of it. G1000 is a material that is kind of difficult to place in the 21st century. As you have stated, for every use case there is a fabric that performs better - Goretex, eVent etc. are more waterproof, down and synthetic insulations are warmer, softshells are mostly windproof and warmer. I think what G1000 excels at is versatility. In its native state it is extremely breathable and lightweight. If you want some water- and wind-repellency while maintaining reasonable breathability you can give it a coat of wax. If you want more of it, give it two coats. Or three. If you want to maintain breathability, leave out the areas under the arms that rarely get hit with rain anyway. If you are cold, layer a fleece underneath as you would with any synthetic hardshell. When summer approaches, just wash the wax away and the jacket is super light and breathable again. You can wear this thing all year around and customise it to your needs - the only thing it will never be suitable for is heavy rain, because waxing will never make it completely waterproof. I have Fjällräven trousers made of G1000 that I have worn hiking in hot and cold climates, in Africa and Scotland, in summer and winter, that I have climbed in and use for indoor and outdoor bouldering - and they are just great at everything! They are going on ten years, by the way, and still in great shape.

Thanks for the feedback. I find that G1000 is an excellent material for pants. I have since acquired another G1000 jacket that I like much better. I use it riding my bike.

My first time using these, I assumed the Mackinaw pants were a stand-alone piece for freezing weather. I couldn't have been more wrong. Went outside in 20-degree snowy weather. My thighs chafed. But with 400g long johns underneath, I pushed the pants to -30F. This was in Montana. The Mackinaw pants handle snow exceptionally. But the weave is sub-par that it doesn't insulate without heavy long johns.
@JimLBon6 ай бұрын
I’ve discovered I’m not a huge fan of wool for pants in general. I think it’s a great pants material, but I’d rather wear G1000 pants with some long John bottoms. Just a personal taste kinda thing. It’s cool to hear from someone testing them outside my use case.

THANKS VERY MUCH, JIM!!!! ---- The reasons we took so long to return your jacket ... YES, we were really busy. Much more this season than ever before. But mainly, as we grow, we need to formalize the process by which we handle returns/service issues. We really don't have a formal procedure/administration for repairs, and that has to change!!! We really appreciate your kind words and of course we really appreciate that you have chosen to wear our wool!!! May you continue to wear the wool in good humor and great health!! --- Ralph
@JimLBon6 ай бұрын
I’m going to hope for great health but good humor is absolutely necessary. Moreso now than ever. I’ll take the lack of a formal process for warranty repair as a statement of general quality and a lack of necessity. That’s just me reading between the lines. Be well! PS - Thanks again for the watch cap. That was completely unnecessary, very appreciated, and the majority of fault lies with me for waiting to send the jacket back at the worst possible time. The customer is NOT always right. I know better.

I totally understand your point, I have one, the reason I bought mine was because my body temperature raised due to medication and I needed a jacket for spring/autumn for daily use going to the shops, in and out of the car, walking in the woods etc. Its light and breathable, plus if it does get wet it drys quick, the 35% cotton adds strength over an all polyester jacket. Also Fjallraven sizes are not for normal people, you have to have an athletic build, but its not just that the cut can be wrong too, really is trial and error, I recommend trying on before you buy.

I have two pair of Filson Whipcord pants, bought in the '70's. They too are just a little under the stated size. Not nearly as heavy as the Mackinaw wool pants, but very tight weave and totally windproof. Wore them for years throughout a several months long hunting season as a packer and guide, still look like new. Never too hot or too cold. Too bad they don't still make them.
