LOTS of stuff you can play like that!! If you’re doing a solo gig-just your guitar and voice-those open strings take up a lot of space and give you a fuller, more stable accompaniment to sing over. I stole the Aadd9 and the Badd4 ideas from The Edge. Near as I can tell these are the type of chords he uses in the verse after the guitar break in “Pride”. Thanks for chiming in!

Either term works. In classical guitar music, depending on the nationality of the publisher, you can see “barre”, “bar”, “barr”, Ceja, C, or even 1/2C or a “cents” symbol (a capital C with a vertical slash through it) which indicates a 1/2 barre.

If you want a great example of a song that uses something like this, check out "Seagull" by Paul Rodgers, which is on the first Bad Company album. It's in Drop D and the verse chords are D C G/B D. (He plays some embellishments and such, but that's pretty much it.) The chorus is D A C/A G/A D. Pretty strongly Mixolydian with a dip into Ionian.

@@davidholland2827 You have really good content. I send your videos along when they come out. I know music theory pretty well but I really liked the one on major with the bVII instead of the diminished. I knew that but didn't have a quick way to express it. That really nailed how rock, country, etc., works, kind of mixing major and Mixolydian.
@stringemup5941
@stringemup5941 Ай бұрын
Yeah. Either combining 2 blues keys or borrowing that bVII from parallel mixolydian. You can also think of it as borrowing from parallel natural minor. @@stringemup5941 It makes a lot of sense to think of the harmonic and melodic minors as being such common borrowings from the major as to get their own names, so what you're saying is that we're naming the very common borrowing from the natural minor into the major. I was a HUGE fan of this album (like every Kiss album) when I first heard it in the late '80s on a reissued cassette (stolen long ago by someone). I have three versions: an original 1981 vinyl, the 2014 180 Gram Reissue, and a cheap CD Reissue of which I have no idea on the release date. The 1981 pressing I have has a clear inner sleeve with only technical info but no lyrics. The cardboard sleeves are almost exactly the same. The two major differences are the inner sleeves (1981 plastic vs 2014 lyric paper) and the track listings are different as well. The 1981 has The Oath as the first track of side 1 whereas the reissue has the originally intended track listing and starts with Fanfare on side 1. Check out Discogs to see images of various versions.

You’re right, people need ear training-badly. BUT they also need to be able to quantify WHAT they’re playing-that’s half of the ear-training equation. I can’t share an idea in 60 seconds unless I can use meaningful terminology that can be repeated in any key. “Put a finger here, and ding the string here”isn’t an effective sharing strategy in this setting. Any real value in a short tutorial like this comes from the viewer putting in further work and transposition on their own. All I’m doing is suggesting an idea. Thanks for commenting! It’s appreciated!

@@stringemup5941 Fair enough, some of it does go deeper when playing though, I have noticed in studios guitarists stuttering or being more classical musicians rather than freeing their minds and playing off the emotion and freestyle and rather having their mind a little to busy worrying about over complication and complex cord shapes and progressive guitar techniques that relatively don't matter to their actual audience. This is a great introduction for composing and writing more so.

I tend to go with the "loose wrist" theory. Early on, as a student of Dave's, he preached appropriate anchoring of the arm and wrist on the guitar body. It took years to understand what he was telling me "anchored arm, loose wrist." But once you learn to anchor your arm to the guitar body and let your wrist be loose you begin to appreciate why it helps SO MUCH! Watch great guitar players doing rhythm or lead parts. Their arms for the most part are anchored but their wrists are quite loose. Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, Glen Campbell, Brad Paisley are great examples.
