Yes, these conductor plates are well known for failing. I have replaced one myself on my Vito transmission and it fixed the problem. Another thing that can fail on these 722.6 transmissions is the gear shift selector module which, on my Vito, is situated in the angled column below the gear stick. If this fails it can cause all sorts of problems. It's just three small pcbs, easy access and easy to replace. Access by removing a few trim screws. A complicated gearbox but lovely when it's working!

I have the same one with the 6speed manual .(grey interior ) . I’m hearing more and more that the manual 6speed is quite rare. Good to know. I love the older bmws. As an owner of 3 e39s( a 2000. M5, 97 540/6 and a 98 540A parts car) they are much more engaging to drive in manual form. I think The automatic transmissions from that Era didn’t work quite as well for sporty driving. Nevertheless the analog feel when driving is something that a lot of modern cars don’t possess.

The R129 (mine’s a ‘97 Straight Six) is much more ‘rigid’ with the hard top on, obviously more bendy without roof - not because it’s “90’s”.
