Hi Rob! I've read your article on the shifts with Pyramid and the Pilot Peak strain. (I'm also a part of your Facebook group.) Loved the video!Do you think that March and February will be as it was this year? I heard it was a lot slower than normal this year. (I've only been fishing Pyramid for a year now; I've done 5 trips with 3-4 days each.)
@robanderson74447 ай бұрын
Hey buddy, great question. I just think that there are not nearly as many Summit Strain fish in the lake as in the old days and that drives the February-April shore fishing.
@akintomeatloaf7 ай бұрын
@@robanderson7444 Yeah, that makes sense! Also, it was my first time fishing the lake the week of Thanksgiving. I got my PB at 13.3 on the strip, along with a few 11s and a 10. . Do you think the Pilot strain fatten up for the winter, similar to other trout? Do the Summits do the same too? Was the last Oct-Nov as good as it's ever been, average, or worse than average on previous years?

I am Bryce Nielson. I was the fisheries biologist that worked for years recovering what I believed were the extinct form of lahontan cutthroat trout that existed in a remote stream on the Utah side of the Pilot Mountains. I always believed that if I could get them beck into Pyramid Lake they would explode . There is a long story that I won't go into to it but a characteristic of these fish is the ability to survive in warm water and were very pisciverous (fish eaters). I am glad that they are back in their original habitat .

I started fishing Duck Valley in 1992. It was reliably the best fishing experience year after year mainly due to the outstanding job the Sho Pai tribe does with managing it. Most of the fish catching video in this post was from Mountain View which is in Idaho. The 2 other reservoirs available are Billy Shaw and Sheep Creek both located in Nevada. Billy Shaw is managed as a trophy lake and is fly fishing only, Mtn View and Sheep Creek don't have special regs. While all 3 reservoirs offer outstanding fishing, I typically had my best experiences at Sheep Creek. Sheep Creek also offers Smallmouth Bass although Rainbow trout are the most prevalent species. One thing you can almost always count on is for the wind to become a factor so be prepared and exercise caution because it can come up suddenly and quickly turn into a dangerous situation if you're in a small boat. You also need to be aware that to fish on the Duck Valley reservation you will need to purchase a tribal permit. Access to the reservation was closed to anyone outside of the tribe during the pandemic. I was fortunate enough to be able to go down and fish Sheep Creek reservoir right after they re opened when the access restriction for outsiders was removed. I literally had to stop fishing mid day because my arms were so tired from catching and releasing so many 2 to 5 pound fish one right after another.
