What's code/recommendation for the distance an above ground propane tank should be from a home or structure? My concern is heat from fire causing pressure to build and the pressure relief valve opening.

Thanks for the video and it is great to see that you have used a non-combustible panel to enclose the eave. My concern is that given you have installed 1/16" screen on the backside of the Hardie panels, painting the panels with a sprayer may have clogged those 1/16" holes. I've seen a number of instances of a painting crew essentially eliminating the eave venting due to use of a sprayer on 1/8" screening. 1/16" screening will likely clog more readily. I'd recommend using a roller for the vent hole portion of the panel.

Hi Tom, Thank you for that question, that's a good point. I was just up at the site today and looked to see if our sprayer had clogged up the mesh. It did not. We spray multiple light coats when we spray and the thickness of the fiber cement soffit was enough to shield the mesh on the inside. I tried to take a photo to share but my phone camera couldn't focus that close up. This is a good thing for people to consider when they are DIY'ing. Those sprayers are tricky to apply even coating without drips and often beginners will over spray creating drips and problems like the one you brought up. If you are doing this work yourself, consider using a roller and brush. Kazoo Shearman, Managing Owner of Shearman Builders

Good reminder for people. Just cleared mine a few days ago. Removed a very old rotten fruit tree next to it and like you made a 15 ft space around the tank. Youre in Cali? My home owners insurance was canceled, 95658. Priced out at $550 a month and $20k deductible so taking extra precautions with the defensible space. Also cleared around the well head.

lol, please educate yourself and remove this nonsense. We call it crowning. In intense fires the entire crown of the tree can ignite instantaneously. On steep slopes and gullies this can cause a chain reaction resulting in flames hundreds of feet high which cause fires to spread incredibly fast. Planting eucalyptus in Spain, Greece, turkey and California etc is shear madness. They will often naturalise and displace local flora.😮

If, while leaving during a fire and your car catches on fire, is it wisest to stop and put it out with a fire extinguisher or just to proceed?
@marinwildfirepreventionaut282 ай бұрын
There isn't a one size fits all answer to this question. Is it simply some debris on the car or perhaps external items attached to the car? If that's the case, it may be a good idea to stop and extinguish what is burning. However, if the fire is burning in the engine compartment or other internal areas, it is unlikely an extinguisher will be useful. In this case, you will need to exit the vehicle and look to get into another vehicle if you can. We really want you to continue to be protected by a vehicle. In either case, when you pull over, please be sure to pull over to the side so that other vehicles can get by. We feel it is important to point out that it is VERY rare for vehicles to catch fire while evacuating. Most vehicles you see after a fire that are burned only AFTER they were abandoned on the road.

Bamboo trees are not to be burnt because they contain a high amount of silica in their stems, leaves, and roots. Silica is a mineral that has a very high melting point, and when burned, it can form a hard, glassy residue that can damage soil fertility and inhibit plant growth

Please suggest that red flag days are not the time to clear a defensible space using weed eaters or chainsaws. The risk of a spark from such devices far out way the benefits at that time. Plan to clear brush when the humidity is high, ie in the spring and preferably in the morning.
@FIRESafeMARIN3 ай бұрын
Good suggestion, Rick. Red Flag Days are when conditions are right for a wildfire to spread rapidly. So any spark could be the ignition point. Don't use power tools or use anything with open flame outdoors. And keep alert for signs of smoke. Red Flag Days are the time to prepare for evacuation and move cumbustibles away from your home. For more information check out our website: firesafemarin.org/prepare-yourself/red-flag-warnings/
@FIRESafeMARIN2 ай бұрын
Good points, Rich. As you note, creating defensible space needs to be done in preparation for wildfire - not as a last minute strategy. And regular maintenance is key to keeping vegetation low, and space between plants. Go to firesafemarin.org/prepare-yourself/red-flag-warnings/ for more information about what to do and what NOT to do on Red Flag Days. Thanks!

I am a little concerned… Wouldn’t you need to increase the surface area over the screen as you decrease the dimensions of the holes because the decrease in dimensions of the screen material is going to reduce the amount of air circulation under your house, and possibly, therefore increase the humidity and/or moisture accumulation in the crawlspace.
@FIRESafeMARIN3 ай бұрын
Hi @ThomasElmore-dh7pu. Particularly in the more temperate climates where we live, attic spaces are typically warm spaces and therefore dry spaces, so some decrease where airflow is otherwise currently adequate shouldn’t be a problem. Moisture-related degradation problems could develop should a roof leak occur, but if that were to happen, even ventilation to code may not be sufficient. With crawl spaces, it would depend on soil moisture conditions, but there are other mitigation strategies that could be used in crawl spaces that could dramatically reduce the amount of required venting. For both attics and crawl spaces adding vents is always an option, although usually not a very satisfying one. You will note that in the IBHS NFPA one-page document here: IBHS Attic and Crawl Space Vents Wildfire Fact Sheet
@NathanOliver2222 ай бұрын
Vulcan Vents have about %3 reduction in airflow vs 1/8th mesh. You wont find better airflow.

The thing with trees is that if the trees are close to the structure than they will shed leaves/needles over the roof and in the gutters. This will create highly flammable material on the roof.
@FIRESafeMARIN3 ай бұрын
@karmazov agreed. It is important residents keep vigilant about keeping gutters and roofs cleared from leaves /needles. Maintenance is key.

Thank you so much for making this video. I havent yet seen an organizational scale fuel treatment like the one you draw in the video. Is the drawn spacing to scale? If so, where can I tour a site or get pictures? This looks very different than a CAL FIRE type shaded fuel break, and that piques my interest.

@theofitanides2212 this is just an illustration of fire behaviror in treated vs untreated areas and not drawn to scale.
