please tell me the difference between Interactionism and Interpretivism. And how they are related to Social Action Approach
@danielseth9072
@danielseth9072 Жыл бұрын
Hi Raghavendra thanks for your questions. So the difference is as follows. The interactionist perspective is the view of society and the view of how to explain human behaviour. They argue individuals have freewill and choice, and are influenced in their actions by meanings and interpretations. Society is the outcome of the many interactions between individuals. The interpretivist perspective is the view of how to conduct research methods and how we can study and gain knowledge about human behaviour and social life. Interpretivist thinkers argue qualitative methods and data are best because they offer more opportunities to understand in depth what life is like from the point of view of the individuals they wish to study. The two perspectives of interactionism and interpretivist overlap and relate to each other. This is because if you assume - as do the interactionists - that human behaviour is a result of individually held meanings and interpretations, alongside the freewill and choice that every individual human being has, then your explanation of how to study social life follows from that perspective about the nature of human behaviour. If we cannot explain human behaviour as do the structuralists, as a result of external social forces, then consequently our view of what kind of knowledge is required will also differ. The social action approach refers to those perspectives such as symbolic interactionism and phenomenology, which emphasise the importance of small-scale actions by individuals, which are to an extent freely chosen, guided by or influenced by the meanings and interpretations applied to their life and actions which each individual holds. It helps to look at the differences between Durkheim’s study of suicide - influenced by a positivist perspective of research methods and society, and Douglas who conveys the interpretivist approach to suicide. Durkheim argues we need only to collect data on the broad large scale patterns of suicide, marriage, parenthood and religion. From this we can identify correlations and eventually causal relationships between those variables. Douglas argues we need to know about the beliefs held by individuals in relation to suicide. Also look at other studies as examples. Another good one is Paul Willis’s Learning to Labour which adopts an interpretivist framework - trying to understand working class boys attitudes to education in a particular school.

Hi Gejsh Fausbj, I have updated the description, here's some pointers on key names - In applying key names of sociological theorists to further extend your knowledge and understanding, look at the different definitions of social class provided by: - Karl Marx, who focuses on economic ownership - how much capital people have - as the main cause, or shaping factor of social class divisions. - Max Weber, who like Marx focuses on economic ownership as most important, but he also considered culture, and status/social position based on other factors to be important in explaining social class divisions. For example Weber considered factors such as age, gender and ethnicity and race to be important factors in explaining status, alongside economic ownership. Importantly, Weber added the factor of profession and relationship to the labour market, in defining and studying social class. In other words, what job you do is important to Weber, as well as how much money you have. These are just starting points - more recent/contemporary sociological studies have used the work of Marx and Weber to measure social class. For example studies by Fiona Devine and Mike Savage - www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-22007058. Here is a link to a useful set of notes - click on the blue section headings on the left to explore. www.sociology.org.uk/n_inequality.htm
