Ok, I've done no internet researching 'cause i'm only mildly curious and I know that there are people out there with the knowledge on hand that don't mind sharing. So I ask the comment section: Why isn't there a whaling industry? Why can't i buy whale at a grocery store or farmers market? Does whale taste bad? I've never read a book about a man vs trout or heard a song about people fishing eternally for crab, yet those produce flood the market!

Guys: *One day when the tonguin' is done we'll take our leave and GO. * women: soouun maaye the wellir ma-yyn come to BRRING uss shugir and tee and rumb! wun day when the tunngin iss dun wheel take owwer leev and goe- Ah, yes, ladies, let's take this song and be all hippity-hoppity-happy about adding our vocals to this! but lets make it so it sounds like we're dealing with lemon juice in our mouths, pronounce every word vibrantly, and every word we just end. gooooooooo? is that how the song went? well, too bad. i like turning tough songs into fairy princess songs so let me just cut that short. yippee! song successfully butchered. It's less sexism, more reality. If you don't know how to sing a song tough people sang (I'm not some dick, these are called SEA shantys for a reason, look it up for fucks sake) But if you dont know how to sound tough when singing a song for tough people, then dont sing it. Go sing taylor fuckin swift

It was. However it ironically brought people together, from all strange places on Earth. Has it been made so many mash ups? This was one you couldn't escape, so also the Finnish folk song that took a tour to East Asia, Japan, and the vocaloid Hatsune Miku, to Turkey and the street musician Bilal Göregen, to South Africa where 'The Kiffness' did a remake, joined by a couple of other musicians in South Africa, the one with the 'vibing white cat'. Ievan Polkka. (I read somewhere that the cat is Canadian, but one shouldn't believe everything written!) (Kiffness and Bilal Göregen split 50/50 on what it generates, which should be more than money for one cup of coffee. It went viral in China, charged on a popular list in Italy. What I know these were the two it was impossible to miss, but many more circled around, several based on these. Really cool, I think. When the Internet started the first intention was to give students all over the world access to lectures, scientific reports and articles. Step two became to join the world, give people a platform where you could reach and communicate with people you otherwise would never have a chance to speak with. The Kiffness has done a soon uncountable number of other remixes by now, who hasn't checked out his channel should! (Much more than 'Big Billy', the gray cat, and all other cats, some are really nice, either fun like Billy, or heartbreaking, like 'The Lonely Cat'. Other fun stuff, 'Mr. Coca-Cola', 'Thai Pile Drivers', 'Cucumba', Mongolian throat singer, and also the collab with the leader of the Ukrainian band Boom Box, Andrii Khlyvniuk, the song 'Oy u luzi chervona kalyna' , LONG before Pink Floyd did their version. Money from Kiffness' remix goes to human aid in Ukraine.)

that bass guy absolutely took this thing up to S tier by himself for me tbh, but on tiktok this sound was FULL of duets, including someone pretending to be in a pub supposedly listening to this story being told, and someone who owned a boat kind of play acting like they are one of the whalers singing the shanty out at sea. it was beautiful - not only the song, but the senses of inspiration and cooperation. they each joined in with no fanfare, no buildup. people dunk on tiktok a lot, but there is a huge part of tiktok that's just young people being creative together. and it's no wonder this song spoke to them at the time. we're drowning in political upheaval and experiencing a global pandemic. the story of indentured workers, trying to accomplish an impossible task, with only the relief of eventual tea and rum keeping them going was an easy one to relate to, especially with this kind of sad music. i know we laugh at it now, but i really loved when this was viral on tiktok. what a wonderful moment of community.

I am gratified that there are so many comments about the violin. The violinist's name is Mia Asano, classically trained since the age of 5, went to The Berkley School of Music and now plays a 7-string electric violin, which allows her to play any music for violin, cello, or viola. She is now touring as a duo named "Mia x Ally" alongside Bagpipe phenom Ally the Piper.
