That actually brings back a lot of memories visiting my grandmother who used to live across from the ferry slip. She's been gone 21 years and her house is long gone now. Makes me miss those days 😔

Very few boats use a sail to slow there roll and tac any more in fact i only know of one here in bay county fl.and she is over 80 years old
@rongirard326
@rongirard326 3 жыл бұрын
That sail is not for roll or tack, it is stuck out off the back to keep the bow of the boat pointed into the wind. Otherwise the bow (which is higher than the stern and catches more wind), would be blowing back over the trawl line and dragging fish across the keel of the boat and knocking them off. No one is steering the boat when they haul, the engine is just a bit more than idling in order to keep up with the hauler as the sail on the stern keeps them pointed into the wind.

@@rongirard326 yes sir i know have fitted out a few vessels lately with a sail just built all the rigging for one on a Queen boat here at Andersons marina on the beach here in Panama they work in many ways if you know what you are doing.

This is how we shot long lines back in the day when i first started fishing .dangerous way to do it but it worked just watch out for flying hooks. And sometimes the line tangeled and jerked the whole tub overboard.oh yeah sometimes you would catch a seagull or albatross. Sometimes alot of them and when that happens you catch sharks.lol vicious cycle.

I did this 45 years ago. This was longlining for many small operations. The really good old guys would haul, wind and hang the hook on the side of the bucket as fast as it came in. The main line was high quality tarred cotton. The stick is for when the boat is slow. It flings in a zig zag, keeping more line on good grounds. Netters do that too.

we need to go back to basic and use hooks instead of net, because these huge nets are drag and while its being drag, it destroy all the coral reefs that protects the little fish (babies) because in the near future, when all the land are being occupy by living space. the ocrean will be one of our main source of food, and energy

Thanks for posting. That footage, in contrast to the technology available to even small operators today, is revealing. It is shame that particular fishery was so misunderstood. Hope the same is not happening with the Patagonian toothfish or chilean sea bass as Americans like to call it on their plates. Orange roughy almost gone too. Locale decimation leads to trophic ecosystem problems in manifold ways.

I thought it was quite well established that overfishing was the cause of the collapse. According to who you ask, the blame for that overfishing will be placed either on the fatory dragger ships, or the overabundance of small boat fishers as well as the dragger ships. The dragers seemed to be most at fault, as their nets not only cuth huge swathes though the water, catching every fish within thier width, but also destroy groundfish habitat because of the huge bars/weights that are used to keep the nets taught, spread and controlled as they are dragged. It's like dragging a grader across the seafloor. Not only are you taking all of the edible size fish, who knows what kind of prey species or spawning beds are destroyed doing this...Many scientists warn that we face the threat of ocean wide collapses starting within our lifespan, global...we know it can happen quickly, and to very large areas, and countries still use the reasoning of "if i dont get the fish the other guy will" when going out to deplete international waters....Tragedy of the Commons.

I was hake fishing on the Long Island shore about the time this was filmed. We would run 5 tubs of close gear,hooks about 28 inches apart, and let it set no more than a half hour before we started hauling it back. Most of the sets were for 4 to 5 thousand lbs. of hake and cod. We didnt run by hand tho we used a sluce.

hey can i tell to your group of "shark haters" to go to hell when they die? because the shark finning and long lining are illegal and the man kills 100 million of sharks every year,they kill 5-15 of us every YEAR,dying for bleeding of from bite of sharks,they don't eat the men they attack us because them fear us!
