Doesn't Buffet literally collect like 200 annual mil in Coca Cola dividends? Also, the idea of reinvest=growth, is true only on paper. What it really is, is gambling. You may not be as screwed as with casinos, but stock price doesn't actually follow rational rules. Dividends alone aren't enough to give you a solid return, unless you're already rich, but they're a great way to continually realize your profit.

You’re right he does collect a lot of dividends, purely because his portfolio is so large. He has stated he doesn’t look for dividends alone and this is proven by Berkshire Hathaway has never paid a dividend! Dividends or not, investing is an educated judgement, not gambling. I would say.

Dividends are the way to get income from shares without selling shares. Preferred shares have limited upside and don't participate in the growth of the company as much as common shares, so dividends are of paramount importance. Common shares of low-growth companies also have limited upside, and investors buy them to collect dividends.

Dividend investing only makes sense if you’re taxed favourably for taking dividends rather than capital gains and can’t invest in a tax-free account. In all other cases, it makes no sense. The total return is all that matters

@@Sage.Investing If you live off dividends, they're very convenient. It isn't practical to sell shares to derive income (see below). Preferred shares were invented for income. You have to make the case that preferred shares make no sense to people living off dividends. Can’t sell shares for income: selling shares incurs commission cost, and it can be done only a few times (minimum 100 shares per transaction) before half or all the shares are gone. I always have to explain this obvious fact to people who never considered living off dividends.

@@Lawliet734 I agree. 1 reason I want to be in a position to earn dividends is to earn enough from them that I can have financial freedom to get out of the "9-5" rat race. Of course I intend to diversify my investments by investing in things like real estate and small businesses to earn income along with other income streams I have plans for.

@@Sage.Investing If someone want to earn $5000/month in dividends they would have to earn around $71,000 give or take, so that after CG tax they would be left with around $5000/month. We are gonna pay taxes no matter what until we get Christians in office to abolish all but a low flat head tax not based on percentage on men 20yrs and older. So investing in dividend stocks to live off of makes sense IF we have enough to put down to earn around 13x the amount we hope to get monthly.

didn't factor in interest gain when holding cash is misleading
@Sage.Investing2 ай бұрын
When the money supply is increasing 8-10% per year and inflation is 2-3% per year, holding cash at 4-5% interest means you’re losing serious purchasing power every year
