If you look at the comparison, you make of the new sledgehammer versus the old sledgehammer at the beginning of your interesting segment, you may notice that the old sledgehammer is mushroom on both ends I believe the reason why the old sledgehammer of peers to be so much stronger is because those mushroom marks indicate compressions to the steel, which harden it so overtime it becomes harder than it did when it was brand new

You can see the casting marks on the sides of the Chinese hammer. The American is most likely forged. I think that and the steel type are the main reasons here.

Work hardening is what its called. Definitely a thing. Happens when drilling steel without enough bite too.
