Anywhere to download this? I had a copy of the CD, but I lost it. My brother was at this show while we all were working at Emo's

Can't imagine Hislop or Merton being Tom Waits cup o' Bourbon.
@effess86985 ай бұрын
Given that Loose Talk was only on air in 1983 the piece of work that Tom is talking about is presumably the album Swordfishtrombones. Which has aged much better than the interview, or indeed the Room 101 clip. Never could stand that dog.

I'm slightly neutral with this clip as I'm an Ian Hislop and Tom Waits fan. Ian was right, it's a talkshow, you have to speak up, but Tom is such an ethereal, oddball artist, you've got to respect his ways. Btw, what the hell happened to Nick Hancock? Did he have a Richard Bacon/Angus Deaton style kink dethroning? He was a great presenter.

I think Hislop dropped the ball on that one. Obviously he didn't mean to, but I can understand how Waits would have thought it rude or indeed wasn't quite sure what he was trying to say so got annoyed (I think the problem was it was being filmed live so Hislop couldn't just ask Waits directly to speak up. From what I understand the show itself was a bit of a mess and the sound recording seems awful anyway). Worth noting it was about 10 years before Tom Waits became sober as well, and like Hislop implies he may well be drunk/high here, which doesn't help. Hislop can be a good laugh. I'm a big Tom Waits fan though! Wonderful singer/songwriter, and a really good actor as well. He's actually quite a good talk show guest, but you have to get used to his weirdness/brand of humour. Not sure if his music or personality was Hislop's thing.

I used to watch Loose Talk when it was on Channel 4 and always remember this encounter. My sympathy was with Mr Waits. Losse talk was a shambolic programme where the audience often seemed to be talking amongst themselves during the interviews but the live bands were often quite good.

I used to like 101 when it had time to go through half a dozen items with one guest. Find out a bit about them and have a laugh en route. Hancock and Merton were good. I like skinner but the format is shallow and more contrived
