Absolutely loved this horse. The only knock on him to me was his being pretty lightly raced. But a rock solid performer nonetheless at middle & staying distances. In 13 career starts he was a 2 time G1 winner of the English St Leger over 14-1/2F and here in the Hong Kong Vase over 12F. He also won the Italian Derby-(G2) over 11F and the Floodlit Stakes-(Listed) over 12F on polytrack. He finished 3rd of 14 in the G3 Queen's Vase over 2 miles at Royal-Ascot, 3rd of 8 in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris over 12F at Longchamp, 2nd of 7 in the G2 Great Voltigeur Stakes over 12F at York, 3rd of 10 in the listed Breeders Cup Marathon over 14F at Santa Anita, & 3rd of 13 in the G3 Darley Stakes over 9F at Newmarket. He only finished out of the money twice, both times on a synthetic surface. One was a 4th of 14 finish on polytrack in a Kempton conditions stakes. The worst finish of Mastery's entire career was at Meydan in the 2010 G1 Dubai World Cup on tapeta where he finished 5th of 14 behind Gloria De Campeao, Lizard's Desire, Allybar, & Gio Ponti coming off of a 141 day layoff, over a trip (10F) probably a bit on the sharp side for him. He was just nosed out for 4th by Gio Ponti, but still managed to outrun the likes of Gitano Hernando, Richard's Kid, Mr Brock, Crowded House, Twice Over, Red Desire, Vision D'Etat, Amor De Pobre, & Furthest Land. Lightly raced, but very effective in the races he contested.

What really impressed me about Snow Fairy in this race was that being even further back than the 09' Hong Kong Cup winner, Vision D'Etat, who always had a pretty wicked turn of foot himself, especially in his races that he won over 10F and the extended 10F. Coming off the last turn, they both had to swing out a bit wider than ideal for either, and started their runs basically at the same time. Snow Fairy had another gear entirely and went right on by Vision D'Etat like he was idling

This filly was really amazing to watch, and so durable too. Able to set back off the pace at 12F and still fly home late to win the Epsom Oaks, and she absolutely blitzed the Irish Oaks field over 12F and this field in Japan over 11F. Then drop down in trip and show a lightning turn of foot at Sha Tin to win the Hong Kong Cup over 10F.

Old J J saved some of the best form of his career for last, winning 4 different G1 sprints in 3 different countries in the final 7 starts of his career. He won the G1 Golden Horse Casino Sprint at Scottsville & G1 Mercury Sprint at Clairwood in South Africa, the G1 Hong Kong Sprint at Sha Tin, and the G1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan in Dubai. Not too shabby by anyone's standards.
