Whoa that's interesting. I have 3x XV-5050s, an M-DC1, an SDE-330, and one or two of my TX81Zs that are 100V. I just got the SDE-330, but the other ones have been plugged into 120V power and left on for years and they're fine. But none of them have VFDs. I just assumed there wasn't any real difference... I think all my E-mu rack units actually say they work on a big range of voltages. Now I need to open the SDE-330 and see if the PSU looks like that. I think it's the oldest 100V Roland thing I have. Well, my Boss SE-70s are older but they have power bricks.

Im a PCB layout guy since 1990. Pisses me off that the EEs have taken my job because the software got easier and we became too expensive. Hopefully the EEs enjoy the extra workload and dont miss the highly skilled guys that used to do this stuff with their eyes closed. Long live the PCB Layout Guys.. Tiochaidh Ar La

There are still many companies that employ dedicated PCB layout experts, especially in large-scale consumer electronics, automotive, military and aerospace. And PCB designers who really understand signal and power integrity are in demand. Why not consider learning some SI/PI or RF skills? You can even do this with free access to many professional tools like Ansys EM desktop that has a free student version. Just a thought.

Thank you Schematica, this has been most helpful. I purchased the Rig Kontrol 3 unit from ebay a number of years ago and it worked with Guitar Rig 5. I used it mainly for the Wah and volume expression pedal. Over the years I upgraded to GR6 but did use the wah or stompbox functions on this (but on my pedal board). I have now upgraded to GR7 and added Neural DSP and dumped the pedal board. It has been said on numerous occassions that you cannot use Rig Kontrol with GR7... Oh yes you can and with Neural DSP Gojira in my case. This information was the basis forgetting everything to work. I use the embedded swith to turn the wah on and off as well as other stomp box actions. For the record, I'm still on Windows 10 and the drivers you suggested work. I tried newer ones just to see but I could not get it to work. So, use what this video suggests and you should have no trouble. 🎸👍🎸👍

This is excellent feedback thanks. I had not tried with GR7 (haven't upgraded yet). I was so angry and disappointed that GR6 was LESS than GR5 (They took out the native Rig Kontrol support so it can only be used as interface and generic MIDI controller, which is a pain). Also because GR6 was a paid update and the only new things in it for existing users were things I had previously paid EXTRA for: Rammstein models, and Reflektor (for doing custom IRs). The parallel signal path options and visualization in GR7 does look interesting... but I got so mad at them I went out and bought an AxeFX-III Mk II and switched away from the laptop rig altogether... bummer since I had spent more than a decade with versions of Guitar Rig Pro and had built up a very good library of presets. (Also something that made me angry with GR6 was that the drag-n-drop setlist creation ability was removed... they offered a lame workaround but it's sooooo limited).

Hey, I have a couple of SDE-3000's just wondering if i can convert the transformer inside to work on 220V as its currently 100V I know I could use a external step up/down transformer but would prefer to convert it internally. Thanks!
@schematica Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately that requires a different transformer. The USA/Japan units are the ones that have a 100V/117V primary. For EU/AU you need the unit with the 220/240V transformer. You could possibly buy that as a spare part from your regional Roland service department, but given the age of the units it's not likely a stocked item anymore. You will most likely have to use a step-down transformer.

Very strange limitation of Altium...even the component links would be a breeze if they just made snippets retain the component designators.
@schematica Жыл бұрын
For some architectural reasons Snippets were never able to do it that way. This is an example of how one strength of a product can also be it's weakness in a different way. Components in Altium are actually identified by a GUID so that designators can be reset without breaking the link schematic-to-board, and being able to back-annotate. However, this meant that in a snippet, there was no easy way to prevent the user from duplicating components with GUIDs matching (that should never happen). However that might have been possible with some additional coding effort... and that additional effort always tends to give way to releasing new features instead of finishing existing ones (read the forums, you'll see a lot of users making that comment! ;-))

There are about ten pages in my project and no components are coming into the PCB except the page I use for the device page. How Can I Solve This?
@benjaminjordan8128 Жыл бұрын
In that case either (a) those components have no footprints linked to them and/or (b) your project has errors preventing it from properly compiling and/or (c) the pages are not actually in the project. Check the messages panel and solve any errors top to bottom, and it will eventually work.
@nurseherozoren1040 Жыл бұрын
Before adding the device page to the project, I compiled the project, verified it, and corrected the errors in the message sections, transferred all the components to the pcb, even made the layout, but after using the device page, when I said transfer it to the pcb, only the components of the schematic of the sheet I used in the device page came. Could it be that I didn't give any permission or didn't follow any rules?@@benjaminjordan8128

This is more a factor of the holes being not bring plated. The plated through hole has way more strength to keep the traces from pulling off the board. I'm old enough to remember when many PCB's were single sided and they all had this issue, and they were all FR-4. To fix some of them we used to get the holes plated even on a single sided board just to dramatically improve the trace adhesion reliability around the holes. I'm with you on just get a board made. There are so many 24 hour prototype shops around that produce double sided boards WITH plated through holes that it simply isn't worth the time to mill boards anymore (IMHO, for what I do, your mileage may vary). Thanks for sharing! 🙂

Thank you for sharing this! I have a SDE-3000 arriving soon from JP to try this on. Do you know if this same procedure applies to the SDE/SRV-330 power supplies? I've been looking for a reasonably priced SRV-330 and getting a 100v unit from JP appears to be the most cost effective.
@schematica Жыл бұрын
It should. But the SRV/SDE-330 units are much newer - they might have switching power supplies and may even be universal (like your modern laptop adapter). One of these days I'll check them out.
@schematica Жыл бұрын
Just examined the service notes. The service manual schematics and BOM indicate the Japan/US unit has a transformer for 100 and 117V just like the older units. Attach the blue tap for 117V or the white tap for 100V - so yes in short, this will work for the SDE/SRV-330 as well.

Little tip from graphic design point of view: before aligning text objects to your cutouts make sure you set the text alignment of the text labels so that you could change the font, font size or even the content of the label without having to rearrange the text object afterwards. Makes life so much easier if you gotta change request later on, even you are your own „client“ here, sometimes things look different when printed out than they looked on screen while designing. I’ve been there more than a couple of times.
@schematica Жыл бұрын
Excellent TIP! THANK YOU! Same principle applies in UI design. I believe InkScape can also be used for UI design much like Figma and other tools, that can export into code frameworks, but I've barely got that far with it yet...

*Is that the same for the Boss SE 70 super effects??? I plugged it up for about an hour and man that thing was SO HOT on the bottom moreover. I got it in from japan...*
@schematica Жыл бұрын
SE50/70 are completely DIFFERENT inside. But yes it's the same problem. Given the small size of those units I'm not sure they used a transformer with a tap for 120V. The only way to know is open it up. If you keep using a 100V unit on 120V it will eventually burn out the transformer. To get them the size they did back then, before switching supplies were a thing, they designed the power transformers to be right on the edge of saturation at 60Hz. So it is working, but saturating slightly, which means excessive current in the windings, which means excessive heat and eventual demise.
@botany500kojak10 ай бұрын
@@schematica Doesn't the SE50/70 use a power adapter. 12 Volts if I recall? Correct me if I am wrong, but the problem of 100v/120v would not be an issue like what is explained in the video above.
@RaquelFoster16 күн бұрын
@@botany500kojak LOL yeah I have two SE-70s from Japan, and it's irrelevant because the power bricks put out 12V AC. A lot of this stuff gets kinda hot. The SRV-3030 gets a lot hotter than the SE-70.

I have a design that I want to Reuse. One of the components in this Reuses opportunity exists over 8 schematic sheets. This FPGA has 23 different parts (heterogenous part- BIG Zynq). Should I go through the multiple schematic pages selecting all the relevant components and signals all at one time creating the Reuse Block and then do the same thing with the PCB design? Or should I copy all 23 sheets of my schematic pages and make one giant schematic sheet (size J?) and make that a reuse block? How can I handle this situation? Can I make the whole design a Reuse Block as it is (23 schematic sheets) Or make one giant schematic sheet and make that a Reuse Block?
@schematica Жыл бұрын
IF IT SUPPORTED multi-sheet reuse, I'd make the reuse block project with the subsheets. I have not had the opportunity yet to require a multisheet reuse block. BUT... how many times will you reuse this Zync FPGA? You already have one design and will reuse it for the next, but after that? Doing all the work to factorize the Zync and it's supporting parts into a reuse block will only make sense if you plan to use the same part over and over for many projects. Otherwise I fear you'll not recover the time invested into the activity. If you are planning to reuse it once, maybe twice, it will be more efficient to fork (copy) the existing design and strip out what's not needed for the next one. My 2c...
