Whats with the moronic music. It's supposed to be an information video, so having your voice drowned out by a stupid piano doesn't help. Your piano needs a silence period.

Try try again. Some of the springs under the dial can be a bit hard to to push down. You can see in this video that it took me a couple of goes at the spring to get it to release. And, I even practiced a bunch before I filmed this:)

Wow. Thanks so much. I'm an old telephone repairman, retired after 42 years. But I guess I'm not "old" enough. These phones were before my time. I snagged an old 550 5 line office phone early in my career destined for a dumpster. An old timer rewired it for modular service for me and I've had it for years. Mainly as a conversation piece. I've had it for decades and the dust under the dial graveled my ass. And I never could figure out how to remove the dial. The old guys I knew that had that knowledge have either passed on or have forgotten. Thanks for the video. 10 minutes and my phone looks presentable again! (Just subscribed BTW!)

@ShackingOff

I found a pretty mint Autronic electric keyer since I made this video years ago. I haven't been able to find a manual either. I did find an old ad that state the built-in power supply requires less than 3W, 75 to 130 V @ 60 Hz. The ad also states that it is for use with transmitters keying circuits which break no more than 150V and 80mA. I gave mine 120V and it fired right up and works with all my "modern" radios. I don't use the keyer since all my radios have built-in ones. It is a neat piece of history though. 73 Norm KC9CSC

I’ve seen several of these removal videos now. This one showed such great promise because this is the first one which had the demonstration without the card in the way. I thought, finally, someone’s going to show exactly what you need to press down on by showing a very clear close up of the metal part being pressed to release the plastic dial. But alas. No close up whatsoever. People cannot see (at least on their phones where the vast majority of people watch KZbin) what is being done any better than if the card was in the way to block the view of what is being done. Would love to see you zoom in very close either during the removal (through the transparent plastic), or zoom in very close right after removal and reenact pressing down on the metal part to show exactly how it works. Surely, this would help many people who actually own tools figure out a better tool to use than a safety pin or paper clip. I’m in the process of buying a high quality cinema camera to start making videos for KZbin. But, I have way too many needed videos ahead of a dial removal demonstration to make the needed demonstration this year. If you can, please do a re-shoot based upon the feedback. Always include demonstrations with adequate close ups showing people like they’re five (years old), always try to suggest better, more effective tools for the job (perhaps in addition to the makeshift tool that may be needed in a pinch), and then always explain things at least once, even if very quickly, like we’re five. You can always explain it and show it in a more advanced way also, but don’t forget to also at least quickly cover it in very basic, easy terms. If you make your videos this way, even if the very basic demonstration or explanation is very fast (without you taking too much time or lingering on it-because people can rewind), you will have the world’s best “how to” videos. Here’s wishing you all the best. I think you have the makings of a great KZbinr. Your video was still the best one of all those I watched on the topic. I’m going to go home and watch your video on a bigger screen to see if I can determine what is being done. My fully restored rotary phone was relatively expensive and in a rare, hard-to-find color. But, it appears the clear plastic dial may have shifted or been pressed down unevenly during shipping and is not rotating smoothly on the initial turn from the 7, 8, 9, and 0 holes around toward the metal stop/catch. I want to remove the clear plastic dial itself to examine it better, but I’m still reluctant to start haphazardly jamming sharp objects into the hole given that there could be a misalignment already and that a pin could scratch up the underlying plastic for all I know (even if the area which may potentially get scratched will be covered up).

Thanks for the kind words and great advice! I'm not a real phone collector. I only have a couple that I've got for nostalgic reasons. I just used the method in this video that I saw my parents use when I was a kid. If you need any better pictures to help troubleshoot your problem, email me at the address on the Shacking Off KZbin homepage. I'll see what I can do. If it is not an ITT model, I may not be able to help. -Norm

I don't have a phone with a metal finger plate, but I know there are a few different configurations of them. Check out this page. popmodec.com/f/how-to-remove-your-telephone-dial-card It doesn't have a lot of detailed information, but it covers a few different types of dials. It could give you a starting point to finding out more on your specific type of dial. Good luck!

I thinking about getting into HAM and was thinking about doing something similar to your setup. I was wondering why you didn't go with a metal case for Faraday cage protection?

That is a good question. I keep my kit in a metal trash can that is lined with foam on the inside and a conductive seal on the inside of the lid. I keep all radios that are not in use at the moment in some type of Faraday cage. Thanks for watching.

Thank you for this video. My curiosity demands I ask a few questions: were the legs 10 meters each? What SWR did you have? Was the Balun a 1:1? Was there a need to trim the legs to get better resonance? Respectfully, fm
@ShackingOff
@ShackingOff 10 ай бұрын
The Balun is a MFJ-915 1:1 current balun. For the 20m band, each leg is about 5 meters long for a total antenna length of 10 meters. I found this length using an online dipole length calculator. I cut each of the legs wires a little longer than 5m and went back and forth testing the SWR and cutting a little bit off at a time. I was able to get the a 1:1 SWR at 14.2 MHZ and an SWR under 1.8:1 across the whole 20m band. 73!

Teaching Hams to make their own antennas is an unwasted video (congratulations!). I hear so many Hams complain about how dipoles, beams, quads, yagis cost when they buy them commercially. They think they cannot build them themselves and be just as usable and efficient. WRONG. An antenna can be built out of scrap wire or extruded aluminum pipe and be just as efficient as the commercial stuff while saving so much money and time. Knowing how an antenna works is valuable knowledge, and building them yourself teaches you so much. I bought ONE antenna "off the shelf" back in the 70's - a TA36 Mosley, even then it was $400 with the 40M add on kit. Since then I've built every antenna I have used on the air and saved bundles! I thank you for teaching everybody how to build antennas. 73 de W4FJF.

I keep hitting a roadblock with my cb. When I key it up, an engine code pops up stating “Service Electronic Throttle Control”. Initially I was tied directly to the battery. Hey Joshua, thanks for watching. A couple questions. Are you using an amp with your CB or just the standard 4 watts? What kind of antenna are using and is your SWR good?

@@ShackingOff no amp, Wilson Lil’ Wil and my swr is about 1.6 ish on ch1 and 2.1 on ch 40. I have to fine tune it still. Also, after investigating even deeper, apparently the throttle controller that I had was causing this issue. No more throttle controller for the time being until I can figure something out to alleviate the interference, not sure if ferrite is the trick.
