i love how this song represents how grief comes in waves. when the piece starts/david has just learned, its a kind of quiet shock. the opening section is entirely rubato, like how time seems to slow down as we are given bad news. then, for a moment, we have lonely moments where only one section will sing, representing the hollowness he may feel. then it crescendoes with these diatonic clusters and resolves so heartbreakingly 2 minutes in, when it finally hits him that absalom is dead, and all he can think is "my son, my son, my son, my son..."

Will always be forever grateful that TMEA introduced this piece into the All-State Process. I still have fond memories of practicing this absolutely insane and beautiful piece. <3

The overtones on some of this is just insane. This piece is otherworldly I mean I just feel something I can never really feel while listening to music like this and looking at that score Jesus Christ is this piece a BEAST

This song is so beautiful, so heavenly, but when it comes to this part "when david heard that absalom was slain and he went up into his chamber over the gate and wept, O absalom my son". this part made me in tears. it really hurts me. David really love his son 🥹

Thank you for this playlist! I found the books 2nd hand and they were without recordings, and it began to be really frustrating to analyse the songs without being able to hear them. So great that you have them here!

12:31 starts the depth of David’s mourning with it getting lower as he comes to terms with the death of his son. Eric is truly and god sent for this one.

I've always wanted to study Latin because I find it so amazing that across so many languages like French, Spanish, etc... I could read so many words & that as I, was of course told, is because of our base language. Then when you look into medical terminology well it was a rabbit hole of hyper fixation for a while, lol❗️

I got to sing this at ECODA last year and it sounded so amazing! It's honestly such a hard piece to put together but once it was workshopped we sounded so good. I can't help but think every time I listen to this piece that it should have been apart of the Coraline soundtrack! It just gives me a very chaotic but mysterious vibe but in a good way. 10/10, will always be a favorite of mines.

I hope you all know this poetry came from the ancient medieval latin halls in Germany. I hope the messages of the music get to you. struggles and the beauty and deep issues they generally dealt with It seems to be based from very powerful figures facing one another. Like the first song being about facing a true evil.

And btw the poetry itself. The music they applied was newer than the age of the poetry that was found in those halls ofc. Beautiful none the less perfect together.

dang bruh. i’m a soprano 2 and have region auditions tomorrow and i’m quite nervous. there’s a part where everyone crescendos to fortissimo. the soprano 2 note is a Bb, and it’s in such a weird place in my voice to where i cannot go there w/o cracking.

what key is this in?
@karolvareVO Жыл бұрын
due to the overall complexity of the piece, the sheet music contains no accidentals after the clef, technically putting it in C major even though it doesn't at all sound like it is. this is a recurring theme with most renaissance latin music; they have no tonal center, the term for whatever pitch a song revolves around

a lot of the directors i’ve worked with have written their solfège in Bb, but there really is not specific key
