Yes there was always something going wrong with the locomotive. Every time we wrote it it had severe compressor issues

A truly magnificent documentary of an equally magnificent locomotive. Walter Dove, 4501's Chief Engineer, was a distant cousin of mine, and I had the pleasure of spending time with him at a family reunion near Darlington, S.C. in the early '80s, where he regaled us with railroading stories and shared his collection of audio cassette recordings made in the cab of 4501, narrating what we were hearing as the tapes played. I had little concept at the time of what a slice of history we were receiving. I'm very thankful 4501 and its history have both been so artfully preserved. Speaking of art, 4501 had a neat cameo in a Johnny Cash TV special called 'Ridin' the Rails' in the mid-'70s. The opening sequence shows Johnny at the throttle, thoroughly enjoying the experience. kzbin.info/www/bejne/m3-qpWV7jZedeNE

i don't know if it's just me ... But I really hate seeing a diesel Loco behind a steam Loco unless there is a perfect reason for it like the steam loco is broken down Otherwise I hate seeing it

they can be also act as a dynamic brake support to reduce the wear and tear on steam locomotive breakshoes (fyi: a custom brakeshoes takes a lot of money) and can be supplying electricity to the cars if the diesel is a express passenger type locomotive

Outstanding. Intellectual and emotional. A whole lot of effort obviously went into its making, and that's a credit to those volunteers behind the production. Wish more videos on this platform had the same dedication and spirit too. Thank you so very much.

I think it's hilarious that they call 4501 a "southern" treasure but in service it was stationed in Princeton INDIANA, they kinda stole an Indiana steam treasure. Then avoided the whole state later on during her excursion career. How upsetting...

Just a crying shame to see all the mods and foolishness done to 4501. When I go to a museum I expect to see artifacts in their original, unadulterated condition. Once you start customizing these prized relics you lose your status as a museum
@justinstrickland5382 Жыл бұрын
That’s absolutely absurd. If all equipment was backdated to their original status nothing would pass modern day safety regs. It’s obvious you know nothing of rail preservation
