Such a great follow-up to the previous video. The stats were so interesting! I read some of the nominees but didn't feel like I loved any of them so much I would vote for them 😅 (including A Sorceress Comes to Call and Somewhere Beyond the Sea, sometimes I feel like a Grinch 😂). So I ended up picking a book I was most excited about reading.
@julies_reading2 сағат бұрын
I had that happen to me with all the other genres I had read something for. The max I gave out was like a 3 star in at least the scifi and horror genres so I just didn't vote in those!

If I'm honest I'm mostly just here to hear your thoughts on Voyage - glad that you stuck with it. I personally connected with Dee's humor immediately but I think I'm in more of a minority there. Regardless, I loved how as you kept reading you got to understand how it's a defense mechanism of his. And the twist had me sobbing! I feel like that's one thing Frances did well consistently in this book - planted seeds, but then gave us a lot of information that led us in the wrong direction before showing up the truth. I'm glad Voyage made it to finals for Debut. Anyways, I'm looking to dive more into fantasy as I've only read a few so it's helpful to hear some of your thoughts. Thank you!

I'm so glad I stuck with it too!! The plotting of the mystery and the characters ended up going so well (I was really surprised about the one identity reveal!). I think Goodreads does some curating and doesn't go just by the numbers otherwise VenCo making last year's list doesn't make much sense to me. I could maybe see Someone You Can Build a Nest In by John Wiswell getting nominated. It's on their Book Picks for 2024 list and currently has a rating of 4.04. I'm pretty sure there'll be at least one book about witches. I'm not sure A Sorceress comes to Call fills that spot, that's more of a fairy tale retelling. So maybe The Book of Witching by C.J. Cooke? Also I could see them maybe add a novel that's kinda literary like with Salman Rushdie's Victory City last year, though no idea what recent release could fit.
@julies_readingАй бұрын
Now that the noms have been posted, you're totally right about curation! Two books I didn't have on here because of lower readership made the list . And ironically, they were BOTH books I owned and enjoyed/was anticipating!! And two books I had eliminated made it, so my rules were good but not perfect. They got me pretty close!! I will say, Someone You Can Build a Nest in juuuust missed my list, so I totally agree that was a solid pick. I'd really like to check that one out!

Sunlit Man is definitely a 2023 release. Granted it was released to the wider public in 2024, but still 2023. Also it feels weird for Stormlight Archive 5 not to be nominated this year, but it misses the cut off by a couple of weeks. It should have a good chance of winning 2025.
@julies_readingАй бұрын
Sunlit was on a *singular* editor list of 2024 releases. I didn’t even consider it as a possibility until pretty late in the process - but yeah it really doesn’t feel like a significant enough rerelease. Glad W&T will get its shot next year bc 99% chance it has my vote!!

I LOVE Bunny!! I was scared I wasn't going to "get it" so it sat on my shelves for a couple years.. finally read it last year (5⭐!) and did a re-read this year for a Bunny Readathon... and annotated this time! Glad I did that because I caught some deeper things I initially missed. We had fun discussing theories once the Readathon was over (some had read it for the first time, others were re-readers). Honestly even a second re-read would be good, may do that next year. 🐰
