sounds like you have the spark plug wires wrong. its not firing smoothly as it should. also sounds lean when you rev it. could just be lean though. the coil pack 1 (left side facing forward) commands spark plug 1 and 4. left side goes to one and right side goes to four. right side coil pack commands spark plug 2 and 3. left side two and right side three. make sure thats right! if you dont believe me look up cross-plane vs flat-plane. my kawasaki 1996 ZL600 has 8,000 miles on it!! got it last year and just got it running like a street legend

i can see the 87 heads are line bored correctly from the end plugs at the cam position.be nice if they would've done that on the 1st gens too.instead of having so many cam & top end oiling at low rpms.i dont let my 1st gen idle over 2 minutes, & try to keep rpms over 3500 when poking along to keep the top end oil flowing well.at 20k valve adjustment cams still look new.so it must be working for me.nice bike bud.mines an 84.fun bikes.
