I'm new to gardening and what I've learned is people really hate weeds. But I don't know why when they are nothing more than food and Medicine. Also birds and insects rely on those wildflowers for food and shelter. The "weeds"were here before me and you and are definitely a part of our ecosystem. When you pull a weed you're pulling somethings food and shelter away from them
@rayraysgarden6 ай бұрын
Thanks for the comment! Such a good point! I agree and would even take it a step further, the only thing that makes something a 'weed' is the fact you don't want it growing there such as purslane or dandelions, which both are actually wonderful! I pull weeds in my raised garden beds to make sure the intended plants don't have to compete for nutrients or water, etc.. To your point on others relying on 'weeds', these days I don't even try to get rid of clover in my yard. I used to despise this until I realized that it has the highest attraction to pollinators probably in my backyard. Thanks again for the comment and happy week ahead!

Pruning suckers is generally recommended for indeterminate tomatoes to manage growth and improve airflow, but for determinate tomatoes, pruning suckers will reduce yields as they typically set fruit on predetermined branches.

This year I saved by making old kinky garden hoses into drip irrigation. Just got the cordless with a drill bit & made holes where the plants are. I’ve never watered that way before & it’s so direct the water only needs to stay on about 5 min & they are saturated. I found the shorter hoses (about 10’) offered the best water pressure. Although one 150’ is doing acceptably well but another one is not. So it’s been a learning experience but saving on water & not having to buy a system this year is great!
@rayraysgarden6 ай бұрын
Wow, great tip!! I feel like I throw away a hose of some kind every year lol I am going to try this on my tomatoes this month as I really need to be more consistent with watering. Thanks for the tip big time!!
@kit21306 ай бұрын
@@rayraysgarden yes and even better is to get them on a timer so the system just takes care of itself. I noticed many timers start at daybreak & if I need to use several that doesn’t work with everything on at daybreak so I prefer the ones where you can set a time. Actually, if you need high quality compost or soil ask your local zoo! It’s not only cheap for insanely high quality compost but helps your zoos! For me I can buy a 40lb bag of rich, properly turned compost from herbivore poo for only for $5! Ik it sounds disgusting but my plants are thriving and it’s safe. Compost takes a while and reaches high enough temps to destroy parasites and pathogens left by herbivores before it’s used in garden beds. Compost can’t ever be made safely from carnivores because obviously they eat raw meat and the temps in a compost pile can’t reach high enough to kill the pathogens and parasites from a meat eater so don’t use your dogs poo to compost!
@rayraysgarden6 ай бұрын
Wow, that's ingenious! Ive done the normal chicken, rabbit and duck poo but this is next level! Thanks for the amazing tip!!
@jewdd19896 ай бұрын
@@rayraysgarden Thank you, well if I had chickens, goats or anything like them I’d try but I have two dogs not that I’d use theirs lol so relying on store bought “compost” just wasn’t enough for my wicking beds and so I asked my Dad who was head of maintenance for over a decade at our local zoo and he always had the craziest, most productive gardens I’d seen. He highly encouraged calling the zoo and scheduling a pick up day. Some will let you do truck loads!!! It’s been the best stuff I’ve ever used and waaaay cheaper than store options and it looks just like soil and really doesn’t smell bad at all

Use fall leaves as winter mulch. In Spring, remove just the top layer of the leaf mulch and place it at the bottom of your garden pots, then fill the remaining 3/4 of the pot with soil before planting Spring/Summer flowers. The leaves at the bottom will retain moisture better than dirt alone which will help reduce the amount of watering needed in hot weather.

Hello, you are missing an important point. You are growing Camfrey in a pot thus limiting the plant root access to deep down in the ground where the treasure of nutrition stay in the ground. Camfrey deep roots are supposed to go deep and pick up nutrition and make it avilable in roots and stems to make the best compost.
