I took the ending at face value. They were going to be destroyed because that is what was always coming for them, regardless of how normal and suburban they tried to be. The assassin's identity and motive didn't matter. The use of Journey was important because the song is romantic and anthemic, and full of itself, but lacking substance and depth (I love the tune, and I think it's intention is to evoke a singular feeling that anyone can get onboard with).

Great show, someone suggested on here ages ago that it would be great for a new series, with sil having survived and being the boss, Tony dead obviously, Tony’s kids all grown up and with kids etc, seemed stupid to me, but on reflection could be good.

Always believed that the ending could go either way, depending on one's personal view of crime and punishment, with creator David Chase not wanting to imposing his own opinion. That way, each viewer creates the final scene. WHY NOT!!!

Something to consider is that at the beginning of the Sopranos it is stated that Family is off limits, an old mafia tradition. However during the Series Tony becomes more and more brutal and breaks the rules. The final straw is when Tony orders the killing of a mafia boss in front of his family including children, which is a huge sign of disrespect. By breaking the rules, Tony has just put a huge bullseye on him and now he can be killed anytime, anywhere, for example: just in the middle of a dinner with his family.

The beginning of the scene shows Tony walking in and looking like “here we go again” A call back to Chrissy saying you relive your death over and over in hell. Also the first page of song names when he looks at the jukebox are all pretty telling

Not sorry for this opinion but I still think it was a bullshit ending, and there were other aspects of the show that didn't make sense either. Why didn't Tony's driveway have a security gate? Anyone could have just driven up, parked on the street, walked up the driveway and camped right by the front door, lying in wait, and anyone exiting the house wouldn't have known they were there. Why didn't Tony, even in times of danger, have a bodyguard or two with him? Also, the NY mob wouldn't hit enemies sitting a foot away from family members where "civilians" would be in danger of getting shot and where there were numerous people who might be able to identify the shooters. If they could show Bobby getting shot to pieces in the train store, they should have shown Tony getting blasted apart as well. Depriving the audience of a satisfactorily gory denouement was an insult to everyone who'd watched the show for years.
@rlevitta25 күн бұрын
Sorry but this still doesn’t say if Tony’s alive or dead. Tony’s state is analogous to Schrodinger’s cat - he is simultaneously alive and dead. The only way to determine if the cat is alive or dead is to open the box. You can never do that in Tony’s case because the box can never be opened - the screen went to black.

The ending of the series finale was dreadful. Fans who watched every episode of each season deserved a payoff more cinematic than a prosaic cut to black.
@seanrandles341628 күн бұрын
No one has ever explained why he should get killed? In the story he had made his peace with New York with Phil's assasination and Butch's agreement to pay Janice compensation for Bobby's death , so what reason would they have to kill him ?
@Louis-qt5qb29 күн бұрын
I just rewatched this for the first time since the first time. My opinion stands, it's not done very well and Journey was a terrible music choice to end a series about the mob lol. Tbh it wasn't a bad idea just executed poorly, we don't need to see Tony get shot. But at the very least the gunman approaching the table with the final shot being Tony's face realizing it's game over. Then fade to black.

Guy goes to the bathroom to collect that hidden piece. Members only jacket he looked out of place in that diner. I believe after he came out as like godfather. He shot and dropped the gun and ran out. Tony's son was a punk so he ducked and covered. It was all over and point blank range meg and his wife saw it first facing the bathroom and froze. He should have always had a body guard outside of that house. He had the money for it. Tony had millions

I hated the ending but now I think it's genius. I have seen the series at least thirty times from beginning to end. The shit with Uncle Junior alone is comedy gold. "I remember my mom talking about my dad's retarded brother but I always thought they were talking about you." You can't make that shit up.
@agamerscovenАй бұрын
People still refuse to admit he’s dead. The man literally says “I was driving on ocean park and I saw a restaurant shack and for some reason I thought.. Tony should get it in a place like that.” He just confirmed it. Doesn’t even take critical thinking. “Tony should get it in a place like that.” What do you think he was talking about? Get what? The onion rings? Cmon man. He’s dead. The beginning of the episode he literally flashes back to when Bobby Bacala said, “you probably won’t even hear it coming.”

Either way he was finished dead or a prison sentence where he would have died behind bars. There's no way whomever was left would have supported Carmella after Tony died so her having to get a real job and living in a normal house would have been quite the come down.

Crazy that people are still in denial about this. Yes, he dies in the diner. It’s by far the most likely and narratively coherent scenario, there are countless clues and indications. They just did it in an artful and creative way, which people can’t handle because they’re just too dense and unimaginative.

He’s said repeatedly that no, tony did not definitively die when it cut to black but that eventually he was gonna die or be arrested and he would spend the rest of his life miserable and paranoid about it. The idea that him admitting that earlier drafts of the finale had Tony dying means that Tony died when it cut to black is kinda ridiculous. Do a search for writers and directors talking about changes they made to your favorite pieces of media during rewrites or editing, and tell me whether we should now call that canon? Hate chase all you want for not giving you a definitive ending, but he didn’t, and he’s said so explicitly. So he didn’t definitively die there and this title is misleading.
