You can do this all day long, just watch careful you don't break your back. I find easier to order the skip with a hatch which gives you full access to the inside without unnecessary lifting.

Maybe you should move scaffold boards over so he can use the steps properly and the barrow can stay on scaffold board as scaffold boards are wet they are useless to walk up, nothing to do with muscles steps have to many boards over them hardly any where for his feet
