Got recommended this and wow, this game is still around! Played it at launch but that must have been a million year ago. Had to go and look and yup, still got the box! How is it these days? Healthy pop?

On the busier servers, yes still a healthy population and the newer VIP (Subscriber only servers) (Mordor & Angmar) are proving popular still due to their Wraith mechanics. New expansion coming next month called The Legacy of Morgoth.

Yep. It's very solo friendly for nearly all the levelling content. Obviously a lot of raids, instances do require other players in a fellowship to complete, but that's more end-game.

Can you recruit npc's in this game?

The only NPC's that you gain are some that are discovered by storyline such as the Alchemist or Blacksmith, and three others, but they all stay at your base giving quests or crafting enhancements.
