Interesting that the four women - Helen, Blanche, Mrs. Warren, and Mrs. Oates, got all the best parts --- or maybe they were just the best actors. The men, excepting Albert Oates, were blah.

No titles??!! Time and again these old films are put up on YT with no start or end credits; it destroys the whole point of sitting down to to get engrossed in the experience. Why do they get cut off? It must be deliberate, perhaps some effort to avoid a copyright strike? Very sad.

These old houses, I imagine cold without much insulation and dependent on fireplaces for heat look so cozy in the movies. Decorated so nicely. I wish I had been born in that era and could have afforded one. I always wanted a canopy bed. Looks like this house had electricity but lamps were mainly used. The bedrooms were so big and could fit a small sitting room. I love that. There were no tvs in these old movies and people read books more, played instruments or piano and talked to each other more. Why did we need television in the homes. Going to a movie once in a while would suffice. Seems like back then as is now, the rich travel abroad a lot. I wish it was more affordable. I like how you had a den/living room on one side, another dining room/living room on another side, and a huge entry way in middle with probably fireplaces on both sides. I’ve been in small old homes where there is a fireplace in entryway as soon as you walk in. I imagine to warm guests as soon as they walk in and to maybe dry boots, coats and gloves. But then there might be a small sitting room to side of entry way with another fireplace. I wish I could see what these homes looked like when first built. A blended 1946 family. Now to see it was more normal than thought. In the 1950s, there was still a lot of shame on divorcees. A room just for the telephone seems like a phone booth in house. I think if I lived in a house that big, I’d want servants and others living with me since the house is so big. And the oldest brother using a room for his office and having his admin live in house. Not quite sure what Helen was because she wasn’t a nurse, not a cook or a housekeeper. But the mother of the house treated her like a daughter. Not even the brother who is a full grown man would go down to basement at night without an escort and a candle but this lady goes by herself without an escort. Why didn’t housekeeper go with her. If I were the housekeeper, I would alert both brothers that window is constantly found open. Supposedly she hammered shutters closed. In those days if you didn’t have kids, you got to live on site as a housekeeper in a nice cozy mansion. But your whole life is serving another family while you don’t have time for yourself. These old houses always had so many backstair cases. If I were Helen after she found the body, I would have run out front door, storm or not until morning and with several townspeople and the constable to get my things, leave and never return. They never said how the constable knew the Killer came from that house. I feel like he killed everyone else in an instant even before they had a chance to scream but Helen was able to escape him. If she had any sense that he was answering door, she could have run to basement through back stair, released the other brother and ran outside to constable through basement door. For some reason she only ran to back bedroom to throw a lamp at window. I don’t know how the brother was going to explain all these dead and missing people when the investigation already centered on his home and he winds up only person alive besides his stepmother. She really saved Steven’s life and cured herself. I wonder who died in garden? The nurse was lucky. She got paid for doing nothing and was able to escape.

An excellent film with twists and turns. All of the actors are really good, with Frank Lovejoy being always go and who I listen to quite regularly on OTR, in Nightbeat. A really good actor. I love B&W Film Noir.

In 2024 as a 40 year old it makes you wonder if this is actually what was going on in 1938 around the whole world all in one small village, or it's a rendition of an earlier mindset vs a newer set of thoughts.

I cant get over Annie Jacobsons book, Operation Paperclip. We brought over 1500 Nazi criminals from ww2, gave them immunity, a new identity & made them the head of the CIA. WHAT? Tech was more important then national security but im praying that changes now & all enemies of America are exposed & depised!

10/10. But why would you tell a TOTAL STRANGER that you’ve inherited wealth - sheer madness! And how dim is Mrs Kraft to get a taxi to the middle of nowhere at 11pm with no phone or residence anywhere nearby: and how did she get back to her hotel?? Still fabulous, though!
