That's pretty much the path I took as well - Vortex are fine and do the work, but personally I prefer the *80feet Phunnel bowl* (15 to 20 gram size bowl) over the *Alien mini* for solo sessions, and the larger *Harmony phunnel* (25 - 35 Gram size) for social situations. - Easily the finest bowls I've found on the market for the Shisha smoker! :D

I got a hookah a few days ago, it's a tiny thing but it smokes amazingly, Cost £7.99 at the galleries Bristol it's called the mini marine yanhu, recommended for a cheap shot! Anyway, I got some al fakher grape and almost gagged when I tried it, I inhaled to the mouth. When I inhale to the lungs it is fine, am I smoking it right? Also can you recommend any acceptable/good hookahs for under £30 ($40A)

With any hookah that you put heat to the shish will smoke amazingly. Notice that up there he has a maya bambino with a pretty decently wide gage hose, my guess is a v2; you don't need a decently wide gage hose to get a good pull but most beginners like it because it gives free flow; a nu hose disposable plastic hose does the same and its rewashable and cheap, does the job, not my favorite. It turns any hookah pretty much with no leaks into the feel of a premium hookah. However, since you like small hookahs at least here in the states there is no good hookah for 20 dollars or whatever exactly the 7.99 pounds comes out too. The best small hookah is the mya bambino as shown above; it has been tested again and again to perform full brass I think and no leaks, downside can't purge completely but I think this is a pointless issue some would disagree. The difference imo of hookahs that are small and large is the temp of the smoke, taller hookahs as the stem is longer path for the smoke to travel and more water in the base to cool it down tend to be cooler, however too tall or too wide there is too much dead space and the smoke doesn't pull or travel the way it should and performs more poorly. More advanced smokers or as i was tend to prefer a thinner stem and medium size hookah as it condenses the smoke or makes it dense giving a better flavor profile; clouds are the same in my opinion a dumb issue to worry about because it just reflects the glycerin content (what makes the color of the clouds and shisha more maneagable to burn) really comes down to flavor and using the least amount of heat to get a smoke that you like imo so you avoid hot tingly smoke. These are all my opinions and you will see that just like cigars there are a lot of right ways and wrong ways to smoke hookah, it comes down to what you like.

As for grape shisha it is an excellent shisha however it will taste gross by itself, it usually is mixed with mint, I would start with 50/50 mix or 40/60 mix basically smell it and add to your liking. Smoked it in the beginning and still smoke it, it is a strong flavor though. Watermelon mint or blueberry mint are milder flavors which don't require mint although some will add that you might like more, also my top favorites.

exactly where does the finesse come into play between Egyption and vortex bowls? from what i understand: You lightly & evenly scatter the tobacco about 1 or 2mm just below the bowl rim (so it doesn't burn), you seal a tight drum of foil atop the bowl (puncture 30 holes), and slighly overhanging the bowl's rim, you place three well cooked charcoals 120 degree from each other. Every 15 minutes or so you shift the coals around to distribute heat to the uncooked tobacco. As the coals burn down you gradually shift them into the centre of the bowl. So, where does the vortex bowl require practices different from the traditional egyption bowl?

I think most people start with mod bowl bcz that's what they get as a default when they first get their hookah, which was probably the case. I actually transitioned like the way this video shows. But I use both vortex bowl(Apple on Top) and funnel bowl bcz I only use Funnel bowl for Tangiers. Any other shisha, I use Apple on Top.

Now I know the people on the hookah popularity hype bandwagon are gonna get pissy when I say this.......which is why Im saying it. I bought a knock off vortex and its one of the best bowls I own. Then I bought a legit SS vortex and It shattered when I did the test fit. There wasnt even any shisha in it!!! I still enjoy my mod bowl......umm I even like it better than my phunnels. The standard Egyptian clay bowl is the gold standard of bowls. Also piss on tangiers phunnels.

I just bought a 30cm tall hookah with the big hose and big vortex bowl of some guy for 15 euros. The clouds are so fucking huge! And the taste is awesome. It's deffinetly worth buying a medium sized hookah cause the drag is really great and you get way bigger and thicker smoke than you do with the really small ones. And the taste is better too.
