Is this a 150 model or larger? If not a 150, have you owned a 150 challenger model and what did you think?
@theboatnik132813 күн бұрын
This is a 16’ model with a 70 HP outboard I really like it and the 70 hp is plenty I used to own a 150 challenger model with a 50 HP It was a great boat with dual side consoles I used it for years in coastal waters and fresh water lakes I even took it out through the inlet and trolled outside when the weather was right The 16 is a good bit roomier and a more refined hull shape Both boats are very dry ride Thanks for watching
@sbarrette133513 күн бұрын
@theboatnik1328 ok, I was wondering about roominess and the 150 maybe being too small. Mostly just two people who would ride but don't want to feel cramped either. Do you know anything on the suzuki motors and if they were - are good motors. I am towards Garner area..
@theboatnik132813 күн бұрын
I am not a huge fan of Suzuki outboards Based on my limited experience and with trying to get parts I’m sure others have had better luck I really like the Henry O boats though And McKee The 150 is adequate for 2 fishing but will get crowded with 3 I loved mine though

Great work and knowledge! You really understand how this stuff works. I appreciated how you explained that multiple pours will bond together. I have a similar repair to make on a Precision 21 mast step. The seller said he had the step professionally repaired, but the top layer of fiberglass has cracked, leading me to think the underlying repair was inadequate.

Nice job on the repair! Strange that someone would put a forward looking sonar on a boat that small -- it's not like you have a deep keel to worry about. The last owner must have lived near some very shallow waters to be that worried.

Question about having a transducer shoot directly through a fiberglass hull without a thru-hull. What are the pro's and con's of shooting thru the hull and what would be the limit on the hull thickness it would shoot through? Thanks
@theboatnik132825 күн бұрын
Glueing a transducer inside the hull can work very good The hull has to be solid fiberglass with no core Also no trapped air bubbles which you can’t see, but this is not usually a problem The obvious pro is no hole in the boat The con is sometimes needing to try a few spots to find one that works good I usually use a temporary bond until I know it will work good Thanks for watching
@charlieyirka105126 күн бұрын
As usual excellent job! I have my old fishfinder on my compac. Mounted transducer with the bracket on stern exterior below waterline but is protected by stern. Quite happy with it and cheap.

I’m looking forward to seeing your results when you test the transducer. I’d like to install one on my Sun Cat if I can avoid a thru-hull.

Your transducer should work fine there. That's where I installed mine on my 1976 M17. If you hadn't already used the semi-perm putty on it I would have suggested Silly Putty, of all things. Actually works great for a temp install. Just have to be sure to get all the bubbles out of it.

What is the oil that you are using to lubricate the shaft connecting to the sprocket?
@theboatnik1328Ай бұрын
I think you are referring to the lanolin that I coat a lot of the parts with Lanolin is a natural grease like substance that comes from sheep’s wool It is waterproof and lasts a long time and helps prevent corrosion between metals Also lubricates And not expensive Lanocote is a brand name but any 100% lanolin is the same Edson makes a spray lubricant for the chain, gear, etc but 30 weight oil is fine and much cheaper and is recommended by Edson if not using their spray lubricant The lanolin is not used to lubricate these parts, just as a corrosion protection between assembled parts that don’t need regular lubrication

Thank you for this episode. I've been really trying to narrow down my purchase for next season, and have been leaning towards the Com-Pac line. I'm about a inch shorter than you, but about 100 lbs. heavier, so seeing the actual size of the quarter berths really helped to rule out the 16 for me. I really think that the 23 is the size that I'm likely to settle down with, although the 19 might be a good compromise -- time will tell. As always, please keep up on the great work -- I love the fact that I never know what you'll be working on next -- I'm always hoping that you will come across something different (Skipper 20, Balboa 16 or 20, Precision 18, Rob Roy 23, Tanzer 22, WWP 15 or 19, Seaward 22, or even a Midship 25). Keep up the great work!!!

LOL “Like sleeping in a coffin…” 😂. Great line! I also liked your apt comparison of the cabin being like a pup tent. This was the main factor in our decision to go with the Sun Cat instead of the 16. My wife fell in love with the larger cabin and it makes sense because we will be camping in if for longer stays. As you said, the 16 would work quite well for one person. I have a question about your companionway bug screen. I may have missed it in one of your other videos but have you described how the screen attaches to the boat? Thanks for the informative tour of your 16. Tim
@theboatnik1328Ай бұрын
@timneely946 the screen has a weighted edge sewn in and it just lays over the top and drapes down Kind of a coated lead rope sewn around perimeter I think you can buy these pre made Mine will also work on my CP 23

Good evening my friend. Hope that you are doing well today. I am still having trouble with mt balance. I really can’t do much outside. It has been about 1.5 years since my surgery, so I am not doing well. By actual count I have fallen 75 times since I left the hospital. Most have been in the house, but I have had a couple of ambulance falls. We have not been to the coast but twice this year. No kayaking this year or last year. I have been out of my element which has left me pretty sad. I am glad that you showed us how to sleep on the Compac 16. It looks as if it would be difficult to sleep on your side. I toss and turn a lot at night. I am concerned that I would just about fit. I does look exciting for a couple nights on the lake. At Lake Norman there is so much development that all the coves are filled with houses. At one time, you could find a quiet cove, toss out an anchor and sleep until about 9:00 AM. Anyways thank you for showing me the accommodations. I really like the boat. Even when I had a big boat I wanted a little boat. For guys like us, smaller is the way to go to lakes in North Carolina. Tommy

Just a quick question. Why did you decide to use epoxy rather than polyester? Durability? I certainly find epoxy more durable. Also, the barrier coat you put on before the gelcoat, is that specifically designed so that a good bond can be achieved between the epoxy and the polyester gelcoat?
@theboatnik1328Ай бұрын
Mainly just because I had the epoxy on hand Polyester would have been fine I just find myself using epoxy for most repairs these days The barrier coat definitely helps as a tie coat for gelcoat There is a product made specifically for this but I have never used it and don’t recall the name I thing Fiberglass Warehouse sells it Supposed to work very well between epoxy and gelcoat

Also, these are NOT tender! 😂 They are super stiff actually. In that amount of wind I’d be sitting to leeward to heel MORE. Like any dinghy, they heel a bit but stiffen up considerably when the wind blows. Cleating the halyards at the edge of the companionway is bizarre and not recommended. You need to be able to close that hatch in stronger winds and waves. Lastly, the Honda 2.5 long shaft is the recommended motor for these, a 4 horse is way to heavy and overpowered.
@theboatnik1328Ай бұрын
Previous owner added the cleats in the companionway Unfortunately 4 hp is all I have in a long shaft at the moment Thanks for your comments!

Too bad there wasn't a little more wind. It's funny ... while i was watching the video, i was thinking to myself what a wonderful sound with the waves lapping against the hull -- just as you posted a comment about the same thing! I'm curious ... you mentioned that the mast is taller than the Compac 16 -- is it any harder to step alone in comparison?
@theboatnik13282 ай бұрын
It is not appreciatively heavier, but the cabin top is a bit higher so I use the halyard through a turning block to keep it under control as I step up on the cabin I just cleat it off before stepping up Not really any harder other than the taller step up
