Shame that card talk has to include the baseline fraud inherent in vintage/junk wax baseball cards, but it's a relief to see you have a good box. Shows how important a trusted relationship with a LCS can be for hobbying. I salute those intrepid confectionaires Don, Doug, and Russ who took a chance on sports cards. I suppose we're all lucky Doug didn't get snooty about billing or we would've wound up with *Dongruss*. It would've been fun too have visited the Memphis plant back in the day watching these poorly registered beauties being chopped up by those rusty old blades. Congrats on the Griffey, even though that one looks a little left-biased centering, and chewed by a badger on the bottom, it might be in better shape than the 5 I have LOL...

How fantastic to have a local card shop. I've given up having one near me that resembles those of 35+ years ago, and it sounds like I'm at least 5-600 miles from yours. I'd like to think that the emergence of Donruss really helped Topps to sharpen their game after their 1981 & 1982 issuances. They responded quickly with the strong 1983 design, I think. Donruss may have also used a thinner card stock than Topps in that era, but of a markedly higher quality. I suspect Topps wasn't at all concerned with what Fleer was doing back then, their early stuff had all the charm of 1969 Topps. Best of luck in tracking down a box - thanks again, and a big 'cheers' to the old dude at your local LCS. I'm guessing he met some of the stars of the era as they passed through the upper midwest. Probably teach you to throw a killer screwball, too~! Lol.

@@jimfree0 thank. We have two local card shops. One is new and modern and is from a group of guys that have a big massive card shop In Atlanta. I go there a little bit. They are like 5 miles from my house. They are rude and snotty and have chips on their shoulders. They “ rubbed me the wrong way “. I buy a little from them here and there. The other shop is “ the old man’s shop” he’s in his late 70s and his son is my age ( 48). I get along with both Gina nd his son very well. I usually have a budget of $500-$800 a month I can spend on cards. This shop gets 2/3 of my monthly budget and they treat me accordingly. I’ve been collecting cards non stop since 1986 and have over i million cards. If the modern card shop knew that I’m sure they would treat me differently. But the old man has always treated me good and he has no idea the amount of cards I own. Just goes to show you if you treat people nice they will reciprocate. I very much enjoy the stories from the old man ( even when his son rolls his eyes as he knows the old man tells me the same stories everytime I come In. But there is no other place I would enjoy spending my money that his shop. Even if it’s just to pick up a wax box of 1988 topps. Lol. I started this channel to tell his stories , anc to share my love of cards and the hobby. And I will have a giveaway once I hit 50 subs. And if you are ever in PCB Florida. Look me up. My email address is in my channel description. I would even bring you to visit the old man….

First pack I ever bought was Donruss 1981, and the very last pack I bought was Donruss 1989. Both purchased loose from an open box sitting in the rack of the 7-11 downtown. Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Man, those Donruss guys were so far ahead of the design curve for awhile there. But cripes those guys for all their skill at desktop publishing, while the other guys were still doing undigitized photo layouts, they never ever learned how to properly center and register their cards...Still, fun rip. I'm intrigued by the black side borders of the 1989 design; in the right light it can almost look textured - pretty cool.

Overall condition of the 1975 Topps Brett rookie seems phenomenal - that centering just killed it. 3 millimeter better cut/print precision would've got you that 7.5 the Ryan got. Oof~! From personal experience, and with what I've seen recently, wild grade discrepancies of the 1971 & 1975 Topps cards almost seem to be an SGC specialty. 1971 Topps cards being so prone to damage, and seeing you have the whole set, maybe think of slabbing up the other (HOFers/minor stars/potential HOF'er) rookies in the set: #16, 117, 193, 276, & 709. Baker and Simmons will always have some value. Damn fine results except for that Brett gutpunch. Thanks for sharing.
