I have a question does the ligerature need to be tight?
@stokedonsax25 күн бұрын
It need to be snug enough so that it does not slip around when you vibe your mouthpiece, but not overly tightened. You can break a screw or bend the metal if it’s too tight!

Good evening I just wanted to ask when I practice my scales can practice tongueing each note and also not.
@stokedonsax2 ай бұрын
Great question! I like to practice my scales both ways, but mostly slurred. You hear where your fingers are making mistakes easier this way. But I will also practice them tongued if I want to work on articulation! So it depends on what your goals are. Hope this helps 👍🎷

Try to listen to a great music by a great musician/saxopgonist, internalize their sound and dynamics then practice it in your head before playing the saxophone. you can even practice ideas in your head before you play it on the saxophone. It is another way to practice and sound good.

How long does it take for a beginner to practice G major? Shall I spend 30 min everyday/ What should be ideal schedule?
@stokedonsax3 ай бұрын
30 minutes is a great starting point! An ideal schedule is different for everyone, but as long as you are getting to the fundamentals (scales, long tones, articulations) and reading some music everyday, your practice time will be spent well! If I had 30 minutes for practice as a beginner, I would spend maybe 5-10 minutes practicing this scale.
@patriciadrank65433 ай бұрын
This is a exactly what I tell my students. Now if I could just get them to actually follow through that would be a completely different story. Kids think that they can play Thru something three or four times and then get it up to tempo and it would sound good. A piece of music does not sound good until it is played correctly
@stokedonsax3 ай бұрын
I also see this! I just think that this kind of perspective comes with time and continual reminding. Sometimes it's hard to understand when music is truly clean and correct at a younger age. We just have to keep diligent with the process! 🎷
@jakel.37833 ай бұрын
that's a really old school way of thinking and it doesn't work with today's students this is a problem with the teacher situation, kids these days are using micro learning a lot more and they are interested in a bit of everything with micro rewards, if you work with the systems that are already embedded in them then you'll get significantly better results strive for fun and breadth over getting a song to be perfect and you'll find that you get much better results much quicker and the kids might actually practice more
@stokedonsax3 ай бұрын
@@jakel.3783 I suppose it depends on what age group you’re referring to. Of course, the younger the student, the more simple and small you want to make the lesson. My intent for this topic was to gear it towards young adults through older learners who have the maturity and focus to break down music into pieces so they can practice it with attention to detail. In my experience, even some younger kids are able to handle these ideas! It just depends on who you are working with
@jakel.37833 ай бұрын
@@stokedonsax no, doesn't matter if it's a kid or an adult, if that's the way they learn, it's your job to roll with that and come up with a system that allows them to progress the way they learn stop thinking its a student problem, it's very much a teacher problem, particulalry when music teachers think they know it all and have never actually spent any real time studying how to be an effective teacher i on the other hand have a masters degree in education first and music teacher second and as a result I don't have this issue with my students because I know how to manage them and how to teach them in the way they are now used to learning, which is rarely to "perfect" something slowly and more often to try something a bunch then move on so learn to work with the students and stop blaming them!

When I play B flat, I play an A and use the right hand palm keys. Should I switch to how you do it or is the way I do it fine?
@floaty103 ай бұрын
Side Bb works better for certain keys. Good habit to keep as that transition from Bb to B and C can be tricky using the Bis Key. Especially if your playing a passage at speed. Try playing Take 5 in the original key of Fm on tenor sax and you’ll see what I mean. Regards
@stokedonsax3 ай бұрын
There is definitely nothing wrong side B flat! That is a great one to use, especially for anything chromatic (moving up from B flat to B natural and vice versa). I use bis in this case because it’s less movement for me, and it’s not clunky. When I have to play fast in this key, I find bis flows much easier than side B flat. You can give it a try and see if it helps! It’s good to have both in your arsenal 🎷🤘
