Great build! You know, in high school my shop teacher taught us something: "Form Follows Function". Had to think about that and I came up with my brain's translation: style takes a back seat to performance! The fact that your hydrofoils ain't pretty - that can be fixed later! IT WORKS !!! Be jumbl pproud of that!!! NOICE BUILD!!?!

All Proas are outriggers, but not all outriggers are Proas. What you have here is a tacking outrigger. Proas sail in both directions.

Tim. After building the hulls, where did you souce the fittings and sails? I'm building a small 20' trimaran and if I have to buy individual parts from a chandlery, I'm thinking it will cost a fortune? Cheers

isso não é um proa! proa tem duas proas, vc troca a vela de posição e muda a direção. isso é um "Outrigger boat". Proas tb tem flutuadores, mas funciona de forma diferente.

What an incredible documentary. I binge watched the entire series yesterday evening and tonight. I was hunting for an incredible homemade catamaran story, but I wanted it to fold and fit on a trailer. Yours is a great story. I'm convinced that the making of one is now so much work that if ever I can afford what I want (Dragonfly 28) I should just buy one. Thank you!

Lots of great ideas in this build. Very inspiring I absolutely love it. I wanted to acknowledge the practicality of the thing getting it to the launch site, wheeling it along pavements etc. So often a great launch site can be a fair distance from where you might safely/freely park your car. Currently living in Brighton UK, occasionally launching a Mirror Dinghy which has similarities in build techniques but can actually be a PITA to haul around. Often launching an inflatable kayak which is already to go!! But a Proa would provide so much versatility. The smaller the boat the bigger the fun or so they say :-)

When I was a teenager, I made a career decision that I would not follow my father and go to sea but instead become an airline pilot. I retired 20 years ago flying around the world. Every time I watch a ship video I can't wonder if I made the right choice. Just a fantastic look at your life. Thanks for sharing with us.

I did the opposite, Jim. I followed my father's footsteps and went to sea but wished I'd followed the airline pilot route like you. The grass is probably always greener on the other side. My path has certainly turned out colourful and I'm sure you have many stories to tell with yours. Maybe in the next life I'll swap roles with you;) Thanks for your comment, Jim.

Mate - That's very cool. Well done. Impressive problem solving and I like that you didn't throw tonnes of money at it. The Bunnings plastic sail for example. I came across you video just doing a bit of research on different types of Catamarans and while looking at Proa's yours was in the recommended. Thanks for documenting and the narration. Very keen to see what you choose to do next.

@Tim Weston I completely understand that.. my profile picture is of my Harley street glide that I had customized and turned into a show winner that was rideable and everywhere I went people were attracted to the bike but a situation arose almost a year ago when I broke my tailbone just as I was getting ready to bury my grandmother and I had to sell it unfortunately. It taught me something though looking back on it now. It taught me to never hold a material object including money that high in my life again

Stumbled across your channel because I'm looking at getting into sailing and have 5 years before all the kids are 18 and I'll be 50.. the remainder of my life I plan on sailing and living aboard a sailboat.. you accomplished alot and built a awesome boat.. do you have plans to build other boats or atleast another one for yourself?? And what is the place in this video that has over 80 islands?? Looks like a great place to travel and I have always said if I ever left America the only other place I'd live is Australia. My dad was in love with Australia and planned on going there after he retired unfortunately he passed away shortly before that day came

Hi Bendaves. I've got finished plans on my website for building smaller boats. timwestonboats.com And, ideas for building another big boat in the future to live on. Probably a large outrigger, a much larger version of "Geelong", one of my small boats. It might be Vanuatu, you are talking about, in the Pacific. Or the islands up on the Great Barrier Reef in Oz. Yes, it's worth cruising down this way, once you are in the water (good plan). Sorry to hear about your Dad. Regards, Tim

Absolutely incredible! Seeing these views reminds me of the stories my father told me of New Caledonia and Fiji when he was there in early 1942 enroute to Guadalcanal. His convoy went to Sydney and then to New Caledonia where they were formed into a unit called the "Americal" (Americans in New Caledonia). He was in the 57th Combat Engineering Battalion on Guadalcanal which built Henderson Field. Dad always spoke of this experience as one of the defining events of his life. And he always spoke so lovingly and reverently of the Australians whom, he said, were the greatest people on Earth. I could go on all day but won't, beyond saying, simply, "Thank you" for sharing this remarkable experience and adventure with us all. G'day.

Is this style of construction (Wood and glass) strong enough to support a second floor above the main cabin? What are your thoughts on expanding these plans to 60/62 ft?
@TimWestonboats
@TimWestonboats Жыл бұрын
Hi Chadukrainian. Wood, glass and epoxy is an extremely good construction method and can be made as strong as you need. You just need to scale up the thickness and amount of glass used, to suit the size of boat you are building. You are not limited to 60ft.

Gidday Tim, I have bought the plans for a Waller type hull. These seem very similar. I have most of the hull timber, bulkheads and temporary bulkheads done. I just bought a Kindle copy of your book today. You mention in your video you wrote down all the hours spent in labor on the hull. Did you add them up? What was the total? Regards, David Roberts

G'day David. I put a time line in the back of the book. I counted about 6000 hrs for the build, at the time of launch. And, I probable did another 1500 or more hours of work after I was in the water, for the fit out. thanks for buying my book, and all the best with your build! Regards, Tim
