Awesome local engine that reminds me of our locals. I have videos of 1374-1375 and 1377 only a few numbers away from this one. I actually have videos of 24 local engines working the Back Alleys of Chandler AZ and at the Phoenix yard !!

Have you noticed the detector malfunction?

@erichnoll874 Ай бұрын
Hi @SouthKCRailfan, nice to hear from you. I haven't noticed any malfunction of the mp 293.6 detector except sometimes my scanner doesn't receive a strong enough signal to break squelch and lock on the frequency. Sometimes I will remember to hold the channel 77 on the scanner while waiting for the SB stats message. But I'm forgetful. Is that what you had in mind or something else? By the way, if you hadn't noticed, the city finally took a bunch of no parking signs down west of the tracks on the south side at E 95 Terr 428347V I'm planning to set up there on 10/15 when UP 4014 should come through. I hope you're doing well.

@@erichnoll874 It’s probably not easy to catch on since the readouts have sounded normal but I noticed in one of your SB videos you recorded within the last week and in my video it read out an odd numbered Axle Count and I’m not entirely sure if it’s a big deal but usually it’s supposed to only be even numbered Axle Counts. I haven’t been over at 95th terrace in a while but I do plan on going back at some point and I’ll check it out when I get there. I plan on going to 103rd Street to catch 4014. I hope you’re also doing well.

@SouthKCRailfan ... "an odd numbered Axle Count" Yeah, I either typo'd that axle number or I heard incorrectly and failed to think about an odd number of axles being highly improbable on that. What I have noticed, which is probably not a malfunction, the DD speed number seems to be 5-8 mph higher than I calculate with time and distance for speeds over 35 and more like 2--3 mph higher at lower speeds, 15-35 mph. Comparing 103rd vs 95 ter, I dislike 103rd because there's so much noise from the freeway, there is a lot of traffic on 103rd St, the sight distance south of there is pretty short and most of all, no signal lights. So anyway, have fun, maybe I'll see you around.

Are you picking up the transmission from the train after it passes by the monitoring station?
@BlueRiverRailWatch4
@BlueRiverRailWatch4 6 ай бұрын
Hi, thanks for asking. A defect detector is located near the 422975F ( E 103rd Street) crossing, which is triggered on by the first locomotive or car going over the detector sensor. It transmits on the UP road channel 161.2650 MHz a message giving the detector identification "UP detector mile post 293.6" using a recorded or synthesized female voice. The defect detector then monitors the wheels and bearings of the cars and locomotives for excessive temperature and other defects as they pass over the defect detector. It also counts the axles, measures the speed and checks the air temp. When the last car/locomotive goes past the defect detector trigger, it reports on the above information and either says "No defects" if no defects were detected or (occasionally) "Integrity failure" if any defect was detected. If a defect was detected, the crew has to contact the dispatcher who receives more details from the detector about which axles had trouble. The dispatcher might say "axles 301 and 302 on car HGZX10276 showing high temp", then the crew has to stop, exit the train then walk back to the defect car to determine if it's a true positive and whether it's safe to continue.

@@BlueRiverRailWatch4 I noticed the data you were posting with the videos and was wondering, There is no way he is counting all those axles. Then in this one you showed it and recorded it so it dawned on me about all the sensors they carry and report. A bad bearing is bad deal. That can cause a derailment, not they don't have enough already.

@@james-faulkner Hi, good morning. Yes, there are several useful radio sources on the trains or wayside that I capture and analyze for each train. In many of my videos you hear sort of squawking sounds from the EOTD, HOTD and DPU frequencies. These freqs are monitored in the two scanners I use at the wayside and some SDR radios at my home. The packets contain a lot of great info about the train which is where some of the description info comes from. I'm interested in the hazmats they carry and, especially, any indication of problems with their wheels.

I saw one pressurised tank car marked "propylene oxide" with a 1280 placard and another with a 3286 which is a flammable liquid, toxic, poisonous, corrosive according to my 2000 Emergency Response Guidebook. I didn't check on every tank car but I would say not all were loaded. It is also hard for me to tell from a video playing on my tele. If the springs appear as if can you easily slide a couple of fingers between the coils it is empty. I don't think the transporter would skimp on placards the fines are pretty hefty. Several of the cars that I was able to clearly see if they were empty or not were empty and without placards. I do not know if it is a resolution problem or the springs on the cars are so dirty I couldn't see well.

Hi, I had been under the impression that a non-placarded tank has either no product loaded or only a residual amount remaining in it, i.e. returning the tank to a supplier that will dispose of any residue and re-fill for the next shipment. On the other hand, if the tank is going from the supplier to a customer and is more or less full of the product, it must have an accurate placard affixed. My routine process doesn't attempt to determine load status from the spring compression, only from 1) placarded hopper or tank cars 2) anything that is carried on flat cars or otherwise outwardly exposed freight such as wind turbine blades, Army vehicles, anything on a flat car, etc. Otherwise, if I can't tell what's being carried in a car, I don't say more than boxes or auto racks, for example. So generally unless they fall in either of those two categories, I don't try to determine if they're loaded or empty from the springs. It takes long enough to list the hazmats on manifest, I don't really want to add to the time required. Have a good one.

@@BlueRiverRailWatch4 Determining if they are filled was a skill I was learning while working at ADM. They move rail cars back and forth constantly across CONUS. If we were getting short and would see a train going by we try to call their HQ to see if we could scrounge some cars. So cars do get shipped back and forth empty as well. If you are unable to determine if they are empty or loaded how will you know if there is a placard violation? There are four places the placards should be, front, back and on each side near the rear. I was on a HAZardous Waste OPerations and Emergency Response team (HAZWOPER) for a couple decades and we train with all the information books to deal with hazardous waste clean up that is why I had a guide book laying around. I like to take it on road trips. That propylene is what caused that mess in that little town that was ignorant that "hazardous chemicals came through our town". It is nasty stuff.

Hi, tanks for your comment, pun intended I'm not really looking for violations of any kind but rather only listing the placards I do see and can read on trains I video. I'm analyzing use of an AI to grab the railroad mark number on the side and the UN number of any hazmat placard. But not really trying or wanting to catch an error by a railroader. Thanks again.
