A few years ago i filled out the paperwork to get a new card & included my Orriginal birth certificate like i was told, & sent it to the office in Temple Texas. I never got a new card OR my B. C. back. Its nearly impossible to get these people on the phone, but i did finally reach them at one point & was told they do not ask for original papers any more. I told them they DID insist i send them & never got anything back. Asked them to please send it to me. Never heard from them. I tried for weeks to reach them again, its been so long now i dont even remember what year i sent it all out. Im 74 now & dont have my birth cert. OR a social security card any more. I have no way to get around & could never make the trip to Temple. Im real discusted with the whole system!

The way social security works is the federal government created a special tax called a payroll tax that you and employer pay an equal amount towards. Then the politicians steal those taxes and spend them on other things. Oh yeah they call it borrowing and they have been doing it for 40 years and never paid a dime back. Now even if they stop stealing from the payroll taxes for SS, the receipts soon will be insufficient for the cost of the program. So they bat around ideaS like higher retirement ages or lower benefits. How about if instead they stopped sending our money to Ukraine and just about every other place in the world ( including our enemies), and instead PAY: BACK WHAT YOU STOLE FROM SOCIAL SECURITY RECEIPTS AND DIVERTED TO THE GENERAL FUND!!!! PAY IT BACK OUT OF THE GENERAL FUND THAT YOU GOVERNMENT THEIVES HAVE BEEN DIVERTING IT TO FOR 40 YEARS AND START BUDGETING HONESTLY!!!!

You pay into social security at your jobs and then when you retire, you get to collect that money you paid in. You also then get to have medicare/healthcare when you turn 65. Its all basically like a savings account. I don't know about disability as ive never been on that.

Do I understand this correctly? Even if I'm NOT collecting Medicare or SS, I still have to pay for Medicare Plan B? What if I'm still working and have health benefits? Please clarify....Thank you
@AARPAnswers
@AARPAnswers 4 күн бұрын
@BullDogDan1282 If you don’t enroll in Medicare when you’re first eligible or qualify for a special enrollment period to sign up later, you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty, which is added to your Part B premiums for as long as you have the coverage. To learn more, read this article: spr.ly/60555YKQd or visit spr.ly/60575YKQ5. Thanks! Jodee R.

Going through divorce at 62 , I called and the ssa rep talked me into waiting. Glad he did ! Ended up signing on at 65 even though max benefits for me was 66 and 10 months. I believe you should wait (if you can) but sign on before you max out cuz you never know the future. Also keep working as long as you can even one or two days a week. Guys I know who are 10 yrs older than me and still working are doing much better than those who are not

I have been trying to sign up by phone but I never get a phone call. I call them and they said they tried but it didn’t go through. Why can’t they do it when I call on my appointment day? I called and asked if I could go into the office and they said no. I don’t remember my password and they sent me a temporary password and it did not work multiple times. My children have degrees in computer science. I need help, and they are not helping at all. I have another phone appointment on July 5, they did not give me a time. Any advice would be helpful.

1:58. However if you are not yet receiving benefits, you can apply for survivor benefits now and wait until later to take your own benefits, in order to maximize the amount, even if your own would be higher now.

All SS calculators ASSUME that benefits will be there for the rest of your life. This is a BIG assumption given that congress has NO plan to fully fund SS and the program is going insolvent in less than 10 years. All of this advice to wait long past 62 to get more money is risky. How can you make more benefits in the future if there are constant cuts in benefits and increases in eligibility age going forward? Not possible. Take SS as soon as you can before SS is gone.

Various demographic and social issues are important here, as well. I think there will be more opportunities for older people to work, especially for more educated and skilled workers, into the foreseeable future. I don't have a problem with working, but I do want to take time off to travel, before I get too old to do so. My parents are in their 80s and still live on their own, and my grandparents lived into their 80s and 90s. I'm in my early 60s and in fairly good shape. I haven't ever drank, smoked, or taken illegal drugs, so I should be able to hold up for a few more years, at least.

You don’t qualify for social security until you hit retirement age. Your SSDI benefits kick over automatically the Jan after you turn 66. Well they did for me. I didn’t have to do a thing. If you are younger than 66,…you simply need to wait.

Tomorrow is not promised. By waiting 8yrs. that is 62 to 70 years. you lost already 8yrs., that is 96 months of benefit. At the age of 70, even if the amount is bigger, you do not know how many yrs you have to earn that. You already are behind or lost over $67200. And then inflation is to be considered. What you can get today, now is better than waiting 8yrs.

Using your example, if I chose to start collecting at age 67; $1000/month, I would have collected $36,000 by the time I turn 70. Even if my payments are $240.00 more per month than they were at age 67, I would likely not recoup that money …even if I live to age 90. Am I missing something?

collect at age 62 smaller amount and longer claims, because you don’t know how long you gonna live aside from that the total amount amount you can collect from age 62 is more than if you wait to collect at later age … simple math😀
