Do you look for certain places before you stop to fish?
@scalesntrails4 ай бұрын
So down on PINS 1st thing I look for is deeper first gut right off the beach. 2nd thing is a point or a pinch (Horseshoe gut) creates more current pulling bait fish to the predator fish. 3rd is bait (but I’ve pulled up to spots that looked good couldn’t see bait and caught fish there). Drains on the beach are typically good spots to fish around as well. In the early morning these structure features can be tough to identify but if you stop and watch the waves for a bit you will notice some break differently than others and you can tell where the deeper cuts are through the sandbars. I’m normally not stationary. When you pull up to a spot and catch a few trout real quick and then it stops move down the beach a little they are smart you have to follow them.

Also if tide is falling fish will be on backsides of sandbars. If it’s rising they will be on front sides. Predatory Species use the currents to set up and ambush. Hope this info helps! Good luck!

On my bigger custom surf rod "The Beach Bomber" with the camo handle they aren't. It's called an "acid wrap" got Kardiac Custom Rods down in Flour Bluff to make it for me. Specialized to add more strength but keep rod an action light so I can use it to throwbigger top water but not lose ability to fight bigger fish as I have been broke off by monsters that I couldnt land with my lighter tackle.

@scalesntrails4 ай бұрын
I normally drive down the beach 15-20miles then work my way back depending on driving conditions but you can catch them anywhere you can find good movement in the sandbars. Deeper first guys right off the beach start around 11-12. Start really getting away from people around 10. 4x4 is recommended but there are days you don’t need it. If you go past 22-23miles you will need it for sure

How long does beach season last in TX? I'm heading to Galveston in July.
@scalesntrails5 ай бұрын
Typically runs through late April-early May until mid September when the water begins to cool down! July and August are great months but as it gets hotter the time window in the AM for fish to be shallow will begin to shorten so get out there early!

I had it built by @KardiacOutdoors He specializes in surf and jetty rods. Had it designed to throw a 2 & 3oz spoon, swimbaits and big top waters and plugs. 8' medium heavy with a fast tip. the eyes are acid wrapped to make the rod a little lighter but not lose strength. Hit him up he does great work!

Had a barrel weight on it to get it a little further out there on the cast and to keep the smaller ones from getting pulled in the current so fast. Small adjustments like that make a big difference sometimes.

Do you do guides? Looked like you were near Seagull condos and I’ll be there next week.
@scalesntrails Жыл бұрын
Yes those 2 big towers are the Sandpiper and seagull condos. Around marker 93 I think it is (just north of Towers) There is always a pretty good drain off the beach which means there is a cut in one of the sandbars somewhere nearby which creates stronger currents. Predatory fish use those currents to feed as smaller bait fish get pulled through. If tide is falling fish will position on the back side of sand bar. If tide is rising they will typically be on the front side of the bar. Thats also near the center of beach access 1 and 2 so less people on the beach. If water is clear you can throw lures/spoons/topwaters if its dirty live bait is almost a must. Caught fish right in front of towers with people all around mid day. Right in between the 2 towers there is a spot where the green water would slide into the 2nd gut midday everyday we were there. You set up in front of that with some croaker I'm willing to bet you catch some fish. Croaker works best especially bigger ones. No I don't do any guided trips just an avid beach angler this time of the year. More than happy to share what I know. Let me know how you do!
@scalesntrails Жыл бұрын
Also if you do get croaker a few tips to keep them alive. Use the bait shop water the croaker came from. Bubblers work for a little bit but eventually they will need oxygen. I have the oxygen tank on top of the cooler so I can keep them alive for days. dont stick your hand in water after applying sunscreen use net. will kill them all. If you dont have oxygen the next best thing is to walk out a little deeper with a bucket and get them some fresh water from time to time. without the oxygen tank and larger ice chest I would not get more than 1-2 dozen at a time.
@scalesntrails Жыл бұрын
dont leave direct sunlight water temp will also kill them. very sensitive bait fish

Hey brother, I’m going on a work trip to Corpus Christi and I wanna do some surf fishing. Probably gonna be throwing lures. Would you recommend I use a steel leader ? Or will my line be fine
@scalesntrails Жыл бұрын
It really depends on the water. if Its cleaned up I always use Flouro so the fish cant see it as well. This time of the year fish with teeth begin to show in the surf. Would definitely take some light steel leader with you maybe 20-30lb just in case. I was using 30lb flouro tied with a Alberto knot to the 20lb braid. I caught a 30" blacktip that I didnt get on camera and landed it no problem. Have another video of a feeding frenzy where I really wish I had steel leader tied on that day lol

This time live bait. Water was brown low visibility live bait is almost a must in conditions like that. My preferred tactic would be a top water. Works great with clean water.

How deep was that area, looks you had a Corky Floater on and waiting for it to sink?
@scalesntrails Жыл бұрын
Most of the water we fished that day was thigh to waist deep. Was throwing a variety of fatboy custom corkies early. Switched to the floater when I got a little shallower with more grass. Id let it sink for 5seconds or so, work it like a top water for a few seconds, then pause for 4-5seconds. They would thump it on the first twitch after the pause every time. Rod tip 12 to 6. Makes all the difference. If you are getting grass on the hooks that means you are doing it right. - TIGHT LINES!

About the 3rd time we got out you had bait hitting you in the legs trying to get to the shallows and it crossed my mind that there was probably sharks in the chaos as well. Right about that time I had a 3-4’ black tip come right in front of me. Lol was Awesome! I’ve seen some bigger ones cruise in front of me in the past but none feeding like that so close to the beach
