If the bishop wants to campaign like a politician, take off the priestly garment and enter the public square. He has that right and perhaps an obligation to engage the voting public as a private citizen given his moral and theological compass. However, we are a constitutional republic, and church leaders act to ignore our separation of church and state doctrine.

Our country is a constitutional republic which means the states allow the people to vote on issues. All people, including all Catholics , are allowed to vote on public issues. Individuals, not the establishment, are voting. It might just be that the majority of individuals do not believe as you do. That’s the beauty of our country. We will never ALL agree on everything, but with our democratic system we can live and function together peacefully. I’m sure it was horrific for your grandmother and I’m sorry she witnessed that trauma. However, we must acknowledge that we live in a different time. It is no longer socially unacceptable to have a baby out of wedlock and there are many Women’s Care Centers and other supportive agencies that will help women in need. Whatever situation a woman finds herself in there is help. Abortion does not need to be the only option. Let us error on the side of love for both the mother and baby. Unfortunately, abortions are never safe. I have friends who were sterilized after a “safe” abortion and others who now have PTSD from the procedure itself. Not to mention the millions of women who regret their abortions. May we live in a country where women no longer feel trapped and helpless. May they reach out for the love that is waiting for them.

Its not two visions of life. its two vision of the Constitution. And there's a different between public life and the establishment of religion. You want to be in the public square? fine. You want theocratic laws passed that effect people outside your religion? That's a hard NO. My Catholic grandmother was an RN in the 30s 40s 50s. She saw the devastation of back room abortions. They destroyed women and even killed many. She was pro choice. She didn't care about religious dictates. She cared about the evidence right in front of her face on the front lines. She wanted safe medical abortions under sanitary conditions. Every time time she thought about that history she well up in tears at the horror she witnessed. I now recognize it a PTSD reaction.

Even as a number of good Catholics are aware, the truth that is both parties claim to be advocating for life and neither of them actually are. One advocates for helping those who are poor and needy, immigrant and providing healthcare, but pro-abortion. The other says that it is pro-Christian and anti-abortion, but finds low-income individuals and immigrant a pain in the backside, even financially. Neither party is truly and authentically Catholic/Christian. It is up to the Church to stand up to both parties equally, subtly and obviously, especially in the case of partisanship and partisan loyalty. They are an affront to unity. Obviously and for the most part, loyalty to party and its ideals/issues have replaced the loyalty to Jesus. That is perfidious and dangerous. In the name of God and Mary the Virgin, let's win this struggle. The Immaculate Heart of Mary shall win over.

religious discrimination has been illegal since the mid 1960's. If the Church opposes abortion, it can preach same to all who will listen. But to object to the ERA as a constitutional amendment because it restricts future legislation is convoluted. The ERA IS legislation. And those that believe that reproductive rights is a choice best left to women, their families and their medical providers should not be barred from that by the Church's application of its principles to non-Catholics.
