I thought if I studied Barry Harris this wouldn’t sound so complicated but it’s not working. This guy was a human Jazz machine.

In the 70s I asked Denny Dias (Steely Dan) if he gave guitar lessons. "No!" he answered; I TAKE guitar lessons." He directed me to Joe Pass. I took ONE lesson from Joe at his home north of the Hollywood hills. He started by asking me to name a standard song. I said "Moonlight in Vermont". He played an absolutely gorgeous - and faithful - rendition for me. Then he re-harmonized it - as only he could. Masterpiece! Sadly, in my half hour with him I was nearly overcome by nausea from his cigar smoke.

Unbelievable skill and talent! Joe was the best solo jazz guitarist period in my opinion. Touch, taste, tone and clever lines!
