Amazing piece of engineering to have something retractable yet strong enough not only to take the weight of the boat but also the pounding it must absorb. Do they have to be cognizant of crew position for CG issues? How big is the envelope and are there advantages to being more forward or more rearward in the envelope?

Lovely boat, very well explained. Try Quantum Sails tutorials one day to be convinced. I noticed the backstays....and the fathead. By personal experience; a busy combination! The one tutorial I haven't found yet, is how to use those together well in different conditions. On open Oceans it's ok. On busy waters however...

Why is it - that Australia is no longer involved in the America's Cup these days? Would they in their competitive nature be a force to deal with against the Kiwis? Since the Cats were introduced and now the foiling monohulls the Cup has changed forever. 132-year winning streak... now there is something for the Kiwis to strive for. The next venue - wherever that might be is about who pays the most money for the event. The defender should defend on home waters until beaten fair & square. The oldest sporting trophy there is but some of the drama has disappeared from the racing. No crew work- changing jibs on the fly to adapt to changing wind conditions. No true spinnaker runs downwind to finish, no dial ups in the prestart sequence.
@North_Sails3 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! Australia’s absence largely comes down to the high costs of competing in the America's Cup. If they returned, their competitive spirit could definitely challenge the Kiwis! The shift to foiling monohulls has changed the race-while traditional tactics like spinnaker runs are less common, the high-speed action and tech innovations bring a new kind of excitement. It's all about evolving while honoring the Cup’s history.

Interesting, how do these double skinned soft sails compare to the efficiency of the wing sails on the Sail GP cats? Any other boats looking to use this technology or is it too expensive with the hydraulic sail shaping controls?
@ferdypl3223 ай бұрын
Definitely not as efficient as a solid wing, but there are some boats that use a similar concept (although without individual control of each skin). See the iFly 15 wingsail.

It's hugely interesting to hear Nathan talk about things like the other boat showing on the display, along with laylines and ghost projections. I could not understand how teams could consistently position themselves so successfully in relation to the other boat on the mark roundings, if they could only see their own boat. It would also seem that Team NZ must have done a pretty good job with the race software supplied to all teams, and the early carping from the likes of Ben Ainslie with regard to prestart timing etc was either (at least in part) gamesmanship or it got sorted rather quickly, otherwise the manoeuvres would have not been of a generally high standard. I also wonder if it was a data transmission problem, more than buggy software. Occasional problems with correctly updating overlay lines, eg the start area entry boundaries, seem to my untutored eye more like bandwidth, buffering or error-check issues than anything inherent to the process.

Why do you use these sailing monster racing boats to demonstrate how to trim the sails? what percentage of your buyers have easily adjustable backstays and what percentage of those who has it actually knows how to do that while sailing? Guys, most of us are using in-mast furling mains, our sails has no battens, they are mostly made by DX 350 or 380 fabrics, no carbon masts, no carbon sails and even no carbon wheels etc. we are your customers who doesn't even know that backstays (or shrouds or forestays) are trimmable things while in use... we're the ppl who needs information and some education if possible... video makes me feel like a complete moron as I keep watching... I assume that the ones who has got the boats like in the video doesn't even bother to watch this kind'a content as it gives nothing new that they haven't yet... this is my rookie (pre-intermediate at most) opinion of course...

X-yachts, North Sails so ofcourse their products literally no "real" sailor uses in mast furling sytems... most may just have a line running through some blocks on the back stay
