This reminds me of my own analysis of this scene which I wrote in the Hannibal Doc. The analysis: “Will immediately arrives at Hannibal’s office to confront him about what he just learned. Will knows that Hannibal helped Abigail to dispose of the body but the reason he doesn’t go to Jack is because he hopes to be wrong about it. Will tells Hannibal that Abigail killed Nicholas and Hannibal admits that he is aware of that. Hannibal is now exposed. So he needs to make a judgment call. He then decides to try and explain the situation to Will, anticipating that he would be able to persuade him to keep the secret. Hannibal explains that everything he said to the FBI about that night was true except for one thing. Nicholas attacked them, but Abigail killed him to protect herself. Hannibal knew what was going to happen to her if Jack ever found out about it (Jack was already suspecting Abigail to be connected to her father’s crimes, so this would only make it worse for her). That along with the fact that people and the families of the victims would burn her for her father’s crimes. Hannibal tries to appeal to Will's fatherhood instincts (that Will has created for Abigail because of his personality disorder), saying that Abigail is their responsibility now and they should protect her at all costs. Hannibal also tries to use Will's empathy against him by connecting Abigail’s situation with Will’s experience of killing Hobbs and Hannibal's experiences of killing Tobias. At the end of this conversation Will describes keeping the secret for Abigail’s sake but also for Hannibal’s. With this revelation to Will, Hannibal was not only able to further manipulate Will but he also made him a part of his crime, forcing him to lie to Jack and everyone else and reinforce his relationship to him (by cutting him off from everyone else). By doing this Hannibal had also created a stronger connection with Will. (Logical + Emotional Manipulation, Information Control, Decision Making, Anticipation, Persuasion, EU)” It’s also worth pointing out that Hannibal knew that Will would not tell anyone as he told Abigail that : “Hannibal replies by saying that he knows but the secret is safe. He is able to anticipate that Will will not only keep the secret, but he will also lie to Jack and everyone because he knows that the most important thing in Will’s life is Abigail” It’s seems that we came to a similar conclusion 🤝 although I would put more emphasis on the strategical importance of Hannibal’s decision to tell Will the truth. The funny part is that this isn’t even Hannibal’s best direct manipulation feat 🥶 Anyway, good job for the analysis and good luck in the future 🥂
