I’d like to think this movie affected quite a few millennials, such as myself, when this movie came out. No matter who you are we all have loved somebody that didn’t quite love us back but then hindsight and retrospection hits us as we get together older and realize: we are all Tom hansen and that we create our own tragedy because we are so blinded. I’ve come to realize summer just was not wanting anything serious and was very upfront about it. She was more or less just wanting an FWB or an NSA with Tom. But he was so blindly infatuated and dangerously optimistic and put the pressure of his ideals of a relationship on a cynical women that had lost hope in finding love or a deeper relationship. In the end summer was right, Tom just wasn’t the right person for her and that instead of expectation, which in her case was a lack of expectation, just go with the flow because somebody somewhere can change how you think and how you feel. It’s a hard lesson that I think all young people should learn, to not place expectations on somebody who’s obviously pulling away or even loving from afar. Just live life and when you meet that special person who you llive and who loves you back it’ll happen organically instead of calculated

This is nobody’s fault. It’s just growing up. We’ve all been victim to this. Expectations... always planning conversations in our heads and hoping they would turn out in our favor, but obviously the reality is always much different. Tom fell in love with a girl and might’ve projected too much, of his desires onto her. Summer seemed to live in the moment while Tom constantly thought of the future the what if’s u miss out on the present thinking like that. I gotta watch the movie again tbh

Theres something super addictive about this movie, this scene in particular. Its so painful, and even though his character is in some ways pretty much as guilty as hers, part of me actually feels desperate for his expectations in this scene to be real for him because of how brutally relatable it is. He sets himself up for his own heartbreak by inventing a fictional reality revolving around who he wants her to be.

I saw his film in 2010 my shared house. One other guy and girl and she wanted to show the two of us this film, I had just gone through one of the worst breakups, I think she she wanted it on on purpose, I think she did it on purpose. But this scene, felt like the last 3 months of my life at that time, I would see her and the new guy sometimes and every time, Im tom going down those stairs. Anyway, good luck out there.

I’ve watched hundreds of movies and dozens of TV shows in my life, and I’ve never scene another scene that I can more deeply relate to on a fundamental level. This scene broke me.

The turn of the story is this particular scene in which SUMER FUCKED UP REALLY VERY BAD imo! It's not only expectations vs reality, is seeing how summer doesn't care about Tom in any ways. She knew Tom was in love with her and yet still invited him to that party without even telling she was engage. Summer is not an innocent stupid girl who is not aware of what she's doing. Tom is not her friend! Tom at this point is her Ex whether she wants to admit or not. You don't present a guy with whom you had (recently) sex to your patner as your friend. In this scene Tom is realizing is definitely over, but Summer is trying to convince herself they were just friends and it wasn't a big deal! SHE'S SO DISRESPECTFUL!

How did it take me until just now I went through a situation nearly exactly like this?? It’s so accurate. I had been invited to an event by a good friend of mine I still had strong feelings for. Then invited me to her apartment with a few others, only to find out through little hints I picked up throughout the evening she was seeing someone. What sealed the deal was her gently resting her head on his shoulder then giving him a smooch. I remember getting back to my place later that night apologizing to myself that I didn’t see things clearly. But honestly, who does when love of all emotions is involved. Brilliant fucking film that broke me all over again!
