Hi, can we buy a replacement plunger? First time witnessing in opening a fuel pump head. Also, is it normal for the plunger to have scratches or scarring? Can it still be used or at least function according to its purpose? Thanks!

@1:44 can we buy a plunger separately? What happens if there are scratches to the shaft of that plunger?
@impactodelsurenterprise24402 ай бұрын
No they are lapped in pair with the rotor head and control sleeve. If there're scratches then it would affect injection pressure which would result in poor engine running.

Hello Brady - Mike from SW Western Australia I have a VE fuel injector pump on our 100HP turbo diesel in our yacht. Was delighted to review your 3 videos as I've had a recurring problem that has had the pump off twice. When the engine gets hot and I bring the RPM down towards ~1200 all is good. When I drop the RPM to idle, I'm not able to get the revs up over 1000 RPM no matter what throttle position I put to it. I have to wait till the engine cools to recover throttle response. The problem gets progressively worse over months of use to the point where I cannot get the revs up over 1000, hot or cold. Had the pump serviced; it was good for maybe 50 hours and now it's happening again. Anything come to mind that might be of help? Could that spring you show under the top section of the pump be the problem? After two attempts to have the fuel injector specialists fix it, I'm going to have a shot at fixing it myself. Thank you.
@joecamel6044 Жыл бұрын
OK, I've watched two of your videos and you still don't seem to understand how the cold start function works. You have the mechanics correct but the electrical operation is murky. Follow the harness to the engine and you will find what looks like a coolant temp sensor or oil pressure sensor screwed into the head in a coolant passage. Two wires with a third cut off. The wax is in that switch and depending on how it is wired it can be cold open or cold closed. In the closed position 12 volts is passed through the switch controlling power to the solenoid on the cold start valve which moves the pintle of the valve to operate the fuel passage to the piston area. When the engine heats the switch in the wax pellet sensor on the engine changes state and the 12 volts is no longer passed. The one thing I wanted from your video was to remove the solenoid from the valve and tell me if there is a sealing washer between it and the valve.

What a great series on this pump, the best on KZbin, thank you so much! I want to add LPG into the intake (LPG in europe is simply cheap automotive propane/butane gas) to reduce emissions, save some money, and improve running on veg oil instead of diesel when the time comes. your video really helped me figure this out, thank you :) The only advice i can give in return is that wax actuators like the one in the timing advance are extremely powerful (torquey) and slow, so i would bet that while your demonstration pump is a sticky binary left/right (retard/advance) i'd bet as that wax slowly heats up the timing control is continuous and not simply on/off. The ECU probably sends PWM signals to it constantly, i'll have a look this weekend. many thanks for all your hard work filming this!

Hey man are you still using this account? I’ve got a leak from my boost compensator breather so id like to ask a few questions. Fuel pin seal? Is it doable myself?
@bradymashak231 Жыл бұрын
When you say boost compensator breather, you mean one of the lines attached to the top very top of the pump, where the diaphragm and fuel pin is? I assume you mean it's leaking fuel, not just a boost leak. If that's the case, it might be a torn diaphragm on the fuel delivery pin. It's pretty easy to pull the top of that off, just the 4 screws (but they're really tight, get a good fitting tool so you don't strip them). From there you should be able to see whether or not that big round rubber diaphragm is damaged or not
@Madmax-bw6gb Жыл бұрын
@@bradymashak231 yes a fuel leak sorry :)…. but from my understanding fuel shouldn’t be that high, I’m thinking fuel pin seal. The diaphragm should be just dealing with boost pressure no?

And the breather is just above the fuel return on my pump, not the very top
@bradymashak231 Жыл бұрын
The fuel pin doesn't really seal. So that like 2.5" diaphragm is what actually keeps the fuel from getting up into that very top portion of the pump. Can you email me a picture of the vent like you're talking about though? Still not sure I understand which one you're talking about. [email protected]

Brady, why did the camplate go bad? I 'm asking because i have an engine that shakes at idle and vibrates at most of the revrange. Injectors are overhauled and compression i within 2bar difference. Id like to know what you think. Thanks
@bradymashak231 Жыл бұрын
It's really hard to say for sure what caused my pump to fail. But I'm fairly confident the root cause was my failing lift pump. If the fuel pump isn't full to the top with fuel, then the entire cam plate is not lubricated and cooled properly. And worst case scenario it could actually pull some air into the pumping piston at what ag high rpm and load, the pump side of the cam rollers could lift off the cam plate (like valve hang, if the return spring is aged and theres no fuel pressure pushing it back) and then the rollers could slam back down onto the cam plate and fracture it. If your truck is idling rough, it's either compression, injectors, or the pump/fuel system. But before assuming it's the whole high pressure pump thats bad, I'd check and make sure that your lift pump is flowing fuel. Otherwise these VE pumps hate it when they have to suck fuel all the way from the tank with a shot lift pump, but they will do it and they will idle like crap at a lower than normal rpm in my experience.

How would I adjust to get rid of extreme white smoke unused fuel while cold
@hoppybitter6082 жыл бұрын
adolfo I think the white smoke on start-up is oil burning, usually because the oil has leaked past the rings (or a ring) while the engine is sitting. Unburnt fuel should produce black smoke?

I tested two identical Toyoya 1HZ VE Pumps today. One new and one that had AdBlue put through while driving by mistake and vehcle stopped. Manually turning the pumps with a socket off the vehcle, one spurts out little bits of fuel from the head valves and the other one doesn't pump anything. Think i will buy a new head and rotor. But why is it that AdBlue wrecks the pump isn't it just water or urea. The pump was completely dissmantled and cleaned spotless, there appears to be nothing wrong or broken in the pump. Can see some videos on my channel as well i have put some your helpful vids in a collective playlist. Thanks.
@cannaroe1213 Жыл бұрын
At a guess I'd say its because urea and water don't make a great fuel, and that's supposed to be injected after combustion not before 😅 he also says in this video that some pumps use engine oil for lubrication, others like this (and possibly yours) use diesel fuel as lubricant. If you put water in there, its probably not going to lubricate everything correctly. Anyway tldr I'm sorry for your loss.
@ForPropertyInvestors Жыл бұрын
@@cannaroe1213 I’ve since found out water under very high pressure through the pump rotor acts like sand paper therefore score the rotor barrel and loss of compression eventually stops diesel from being able to be pumped through.

@bradymashak2312 жыл бұрын
Hey Magnus, sorry for a delayed response. With the engine off, there shouldn't be springs pushing that pin in. Is it possible that there was still some fuel pressure when you were trying to re-install it? That would try pushing the pin inwards like that. I don't think it will help, but maybe worth a shot, you could try moving the throttle arm and see if that helps. That would interact with the pivoting components that could be pushing the pin in, but i'm not sure it will help you.

Would the cut-off solenoid fail without the pump failing, or would a failing solenoid take out the pump?
@bradymashak2313 жыл бұрын
The solenoid itself is not very likely to fail, and if it did then it would default to "not running" since the solenoid lifts the plunger up to allow fuel flow. But the rubber tipped plunger definitely could age and break, if maybe the newer diesel fuel ages the rubber, and a piece breaks off. But if that happens, im guessing it would end up restricting fuel flow, since the chunks of rubber are going to end up in bad places. More likely, you have a similar failure as mine, where some metal or dirt got into the pump, and is making the plunger not move up and down. Its not easy, but you could clean the area, and remove the solenoid and test it by keying on and off, to see if it pulls the plunger up inside the solenoid.
@offgridislandfamily3 жыл бұрын
AGAIN, excellent videos! I've replaced my start/stop solenoid 3 times now and have to do it again now. However, it's never the magnetic / mechanical aspect that is failing, but something inside the fuel delivery seating area keeps damaging the rubber plunger. The mechanism 'opens and closes', but the rubber always ends up with a crescent shaped cut, like a fingernail, opposite to the outside circle of the plunger. You can see the damage in my video at 4:11 - kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5SQg2hufMummJY The solenoid I replaced in this video may be 20 years old, and the rubber was crumbly, so didn't think much of the damage. However, every sequential replacement suffers exactly the same 'cut/notch' damage. The plunger doesn't seem to get jammed by any metal shrapnel and the magnetic system always works. ONLY the rubber plunger being damaged in exactly the same way each time. PLEASE HELP! I'm spending about $30 every two months just for new solenoid plungers. Thanks in advance!
