I remember working on the sea wall repairing it in front of the white house. It wasn't looking as nice as it does now, back 40 years ago ( I'm69 now) We slept in caravans as we were not local, wind rocked them and kept us awake. nice to see the house again . Locals said they played cricket out front before the sea eroded it. Nice footage by the way Graeme

Would it have been cheaper to put the sea defences there before the damage was done?

Yes. And English Heritage were told about the undermining for years before.

Of course, it was the later addition that likely created the problem with its encroachment and sea walls. The area has lost its sand deposition sources due to the enormous number of coastal 'protections' that have been installed (and the Victorian era construction). The sand now is likely being deposited into the entrance area of the marina and requires dredging. Once you commit to armoring a coast you commit to endless maintenance and the creation of potential erosion problems for miles up and down the coast. Also, the many thousands of pleasure boats zooming by don't help with their destructive wakes.

The sea wall protection is important to any coastal line. They can make use of metal crap crushed into the form of cemented bricks to construct Sea Walls. It's not only cost-effective but also increases waste-management in a given area.

Cheers for pinching all the shingle from the very end of the spit. Now because of long shore drift you can't gain entry to the river at low tide .And don't get me started on the new shingle bank next to the castle. I hope someone has been sacked due to this navigational nightmare 🤦

There's something darkly humorous about the labeled, "Area at Risk", which is adjacent to the area that's already in ruins, which appears to be even more at risk. Is there a practical but comprehensive solution happening?

A 'seawall' was built in front of so much of the castle that I don't see why it didn't continue along the whole front of the castle - it may have been cost but at the end of the day it has had to be done anyway and the cost of repair on top. It's not as if coastal erosion isn't natural or commonplace

Very intersting and a much stronger castle seems to be emerging. Such a shame that the remedial measures were not identified as the shingle was washed away by the sea. surely it could be seen long ago that erosion was taking place. Seems they would rather wait until a collapse takes place and the rebuild costs sky rocket.

Well that is the way of the UK , any maintenance work even on railway bridges stopped years ago . Modern day thinking ? If it is not making a profit for the share holders , like the water companies ? leave it ? Jolley England . 🤔

If you just place rock on the shore, it won't save athing. You must compact the sand and soil, The waves will just wash the sand and soil out from under the rocks.

Great! But who pays for people choosing to live on those coastlines????? Ultimately, tax payers… loosing “choice resources “ so a small handful of people can wake up to the sounds and views of the oceans. With taxpayer dollars in subsidies for construction and home insurance. Another socialist project for no-doubt stanch capitalist republicans.
