18:04 "... other countries must follow European path of capitlist industrialization in order to establish socialism ". Sounds like what I tend to hear from The Platypus Society members especially Spencer Leonard.

46:35 The Chinese system's renminbi will not replace the dollar. It cannot and should not unless China wishes to see the type of deindustrialization experienced by the UK and the US. As Matt Christman has put it "the problem is that China can't give Russia what it wants like an alternative to the American financial system because they cannot make the renminbi the world currency or or a reserve currency of any kind because then they would have to remove capital controls and financially deregulate and then they wouldn't be a party State anymore."

41:00 "Monopoly...provokes State intervention. What Marx and Engels envisage is that once capitalism arrives at its monopoly phase it will be ripe for transition to socialism. This will be apparent to everybody bc productive forces have been massively centralized, they are monopolized and the illegitimacy of the private ownership of monopoly will become apparent to all." Wow! That never happened.

What's included in the variable 'nature' seems to me to belong in different parts of the equation. Warmth and shelter, along with water used for human sustenance, might more easily fall under cost of necessary labor somehow. (Of course, those 'nature' items today need to be purchased by the worker.) It's harder to stick bar codes on seemingly unlimited air and natural light though. So these forms of 'nature', one might argue, don't belong in the equation at all. (Though, dollars to donuts I bet, Walmart's early installation of skylights in stores surely found its way to the balance sheet.) Fascinating lecture. Thank you!

_"whose revenue costs them neither labour nor care, but comes to them, as it were, of its own accord, and independent of any plan or project of their own"_ Mmmm ... I would say it comes to the landlord as a result of great care and planning. The project of expanded ownership must convince authorities (armed enforcers) to ultimately collect rent on the landlords behalf. That project is the real work of the owner-class: Convincing everybody, that they are, in fact, owners ... not a small feat, and arguably pretty intelligent, although also pretty immoral in the grand scheme of things.

I can't agree this is a “socially owned” space that we can "govern collectively". The internet is ruled by oligarchs, it is nothing like a genuine community. Say the wrong thing and you're gone. It is more like an area within a prison where prisoners are allowed to socialize under the scrutiny of the governor. Marxists talk nonsense while the battle is already lost.

The problem comes when you think the abolition of capitalism will somehow magically make people nice to each other and not seek power and control, because it won't. The same bastards who run capitalism will run any political system. Marx didn't understand human nature, and modern Marxists don't understand psychology.

If only someone spent time shoehorning Marxist logic into enabling us to make a machine that flies, or something like that, we could show it is actually useful, rather than just making economic models that will never work. Maybe integrate the Pareto distribution, although that seems to contradict most of Marx's Precepts, so I guess we can declare it invalid. Utopia will be so great when it finally arrives, and you guys will be first to grab power there, so everything will be fine. I have been so underwhelmed by Marxist theory, the more I look at it, the more I have no idea how anyone takes it seriously. I guess 150 million people last century didn't take it seriously enough, and were directly killed due to its authoritarian/identitarian/Utopian ideas, usually by fellow countrymen. Interestingly in Iran 1977, the crafty Islamics got the jump on the naïve socialists, who were marched from a national parade to the soccer stadium, where they were shown how power emerges from the barrel of a gun. Great to see Hegel there too, his ideas, although closer to religion than actual logic, are scattered across University Marxist landscapes like the clap covers the Drama departments... sometimes very little, often far too much, usually misunderstood and lied about, but effectively ubiquitous Good Work Comrades. Lets see if we can grab some more capitalist money, so we can sit around and tell them how stupid, unproductive and probably racist they are. Then try to ban sarcasm again.
