And yes i agree with you, super long combos are usually well, useless. What i like to do is take a look at my character rush strings(or finishers as i like to call em'), taking note of the strongest ones, then i just usually do 2-3 max of them in a single combo, mix and matching to get the desired effect. Example: i like to use rolling hammers when in sparking mode with characters that have a blockable ultimate(like trunks). This way, you can ensure they won't block your ultimate however they can still Z-counter it

Another thing i'd like to add is that i have noticed a pattern even amongst 'high elo' players, in where they tend to panic when you got sparking and their characters are low in health. This usually means the enemy will try and spam block/swap, so you can just go in and mash square/x and they USUALLY won't counter it soon enough since they'll be panic-mashing

Also also, some sword characters like Trunks and Janemba can do the backstep baiting 'tech' mid combo, then hold triangle to do an UNBLOCKABLE sword cut projectile attack, which is pretty neat for mixups

I think it adds more depth and strategy but you're right in that it's flawed in 2 ways - it's wayyy too easy to run away in this game AND you're UNABLE to FORCE them to tag in your combos. It would be nice if on smashes or grabs you had the option to tag in the last character and nulify some of the HP recovery But hey this game more for casual fun i suppose:/
