Thanks for the explanation. Are you saying ductility factor only applies when the time period is more than 0.6 sec?

I am a mechanical engineer doing some seismic work on a vessel base frame. You, civil engineers, need a lot of imagination to understand these concepts of ductility and seismic rules I would say.

Hi sir, Can the matched response spectrum(of a certain time history ground motion record) be used as an alternative seismic input instead of the design response spectrum(target) from the code?
@spannovationbridgeandseism94213 жыл бұрын
One could do a site-specific response analysis (it's usually carried out by geotechnical engineers). For this, an outcrop ground motion is input at an appropriate level below the ground surface and wave propagation analysis is done to obtain the time history signature at or close to the surface. A design spectrum can then be generated corresponding to the mean or mean plus minus some standard deviation of the response spectra of a number of time histories.

@@spannovationbridgeandseism9421 thank you sir, i'm just wondering, what if i have this ground motion record, then i did a spectral matching of its corresponding RS to the design RS of code (target). Since I already obtained the matched RS, instead of doing a time history analysis using the RS-compatible time history, I will used the corresponding RS of this time history, assigned it at each support, and then perform the conventional response spectrum analysis (but in this case i have different response spectrum at each support of the bridge). do you think it is an acceptable/appropriate procedure?

Please doctor what about the point in the spectrum when T=0 sec? We can't use the equation A=u*w2 in this case right?
@spannovationbridgeandseism94213 жыл бұрын
The Sa value at T = 0 sec corresponds to the peak ground acceleration (PGA).

Well explained. I do have two basic questions. Firstly, during the design stage what are the detail categories mentioned in AASHTO do I need to consider when designing steel box girders and I-girders? My second query is, for railway bridge design, can I use the provisions of AASHTO on fatigue loadings which is 15% increase in wheel load including IM or is there a provision in AREMA to determine the fatigue load from trains? Thank you.
@AT-wx2bw3 жыл бұрын
Great Video- Loved your explanation to make it more rational, Hats off to AASHTO for reducing confusions, unlike others in a similar role on Building Side, You did a great job explaining. This is what I would say a Unified Approach- Meaning regardless of user - The answer would be the same. Instead of being judgemental and/or having answers to the same question to the different users all over the place. in that sense, I would say AASHTO is more deterministic than the rest of the organization in a similar position. I would also say that this outcome also requires better and confident Engineers on Committees.

Thanks for your video, is it possible to include part of live load deflections in to camber, so that you can reduce the total deflections in the structure, e.g. Camber = Dead Def. + 20% Live def.
@spannovationbridgeandseism94213 жыл бұрын
Yes, one could do that. However, the general practice is to not include any live load in camber calculations. Live load deflection and vibration control is related to rider and pedestrian comfort. Camber does not help with this issue.
