MBTA To Deactivate Controls On CTC-1B Commuter Rail Coaches February 3, 2007 Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announced that it will be taking an unnecessary step to deactivate the controls on 25 of their CTC-1B commuter rail coaches because they have more cab control cars than blind trailer cars, the agency said. “This plan has to be done in order to increase the amount of blind trailers in the system,” said MBTA General Manager Daniel A Grabauskas. “The class leader, 1600, has been brought into the shop at BET to have this work performed and will include the removal of all horns, bells, ditch lights and cab controls.” 1601 hasn’t been able to lead a commuter rail train since the summer of 1992. The coaches were constructed by Bombardier in 1989-91 and are currently 18 years old. The MBTA’s commuter rail fleet is maintained by the Massachusetts Bay Commuter Railroad Company (MBCR) and includes 80 locomotives, 270 single and 140 bi-level coaches. The age of the fleet ranges from between 28 and two years. The service carries approximately 450,000 customers on a single weekday. Even though some of the CTC-1Bs will no longer be cab cars, the other 28 CTC-1Bs and all 34 CTC-3s can still lead trains as well as all 24 CTC-4s. They will now be used exclusively as regular blind coaches. The process will continue until the summer of 2009 until all 25 have had their controls “Deactivated”. The T is planning on purchasing new coaches-75 to be exact, of which 28 will be cab cars. If you see these numbers, then they can’t lead a train: 1600, 1601, 1602, 1603, 1604, 1605, 1606, 1607, 1608, 1609, 1610, 1611, 1612, 1613, 1614, 1615, 1616, 1617, 1618, 1619, 1620, 1621, 1622, 1623 and 1624. Each coach can seat 120 riders in a two-plus-three seating configuration. Bombardier built the initial order of 50 coaches for the T due to ridership increases and by mid-1990, over 100 Bombardier-built coaches were delivered to the MBTA. Only 1625, 1626, 1627, 1628, 1629, 1630, 1631, 1632, 1633, 1634, 1635, 1636, 1637, 1638, 1639, 1640, 1641, 1642, 1643, 1644, 1645, 1646, 1647, 1649, 1650, 1651 and 1652 can still lead a train. Other single-level coaches in service were manufactured by Pullman and MBB, said officials. 1648 was wrecked on October 28, 1990 after only a few weeks in service and was a parts source for 16 years. It was brought into BET in early April of 2006 to have important parts removed, then it was scrapped outside as part of the CRASP program. “We have a shortage of blind trailers, that’s why we’re deactivating some of the 1600-series cab cars and turning them into blinds,” said Grabauskas.

Nice! How busy is Wildwood? I’m from New Jersey and I’m coming down to Florida in two weeks and I’m just wondering as I’m planning to go to Wildwood since my dad are going to visit my grandpa who lives near there.

Great video! I wish Q437 still ran at that time. Nowadays they begin doubling up/putting together their train at Nevins Yard in Framingham at about 6 or 6:30 p.m., and they usually don't leave Framingham until 10:00 p.m. or so.
