I wish you had spent more time looking over the Lock. I've seen my share of mud flats and houses. I wanted to have a better look at the boat on the other side of the lock. I wonder what happened to the Box L's. I wish I had one and place to dock her. Does anyone remember the two ships that were anchored near the corner of the Holy Lock and Lock Long. I noticed both were gone when I went back for a NATO exercise in 1985 with AMCC. I figured they had been sent to the beakers. I did some research and discover the De Waden had been refitted and ended up in England. She was name a historic ship and had to be conserved. I found out she was one of the last sailing ships still around that went to Dunkirk. Any way thankyou for the video.

A joy it is, to listen to Shelby Foote, any time I can here his voice, take in what he has to share, and remember what he said.

Great video! I was stationed there on Canopus in 70-71. Magical place to have been.

What was your rate? I was an EN and I worked on the liberty boats--Box L, LCM, and once in a while on an OMB. I was on the Canopus about the same time you were. I'll never forget the fire. EN 1

@@Canopus68 hi shipmate! I was only a 2 year regular. I made it to FN. Worked in the NDT lab. I left after the fire as my time was up.

@@Canopus68 i was only a 2 year regular when i left. I only got up to FN. I worked in the NDT lab. Yes that fire made me decide to leave instead of staying a few more years.

@@Canopus68..i thought i had answered you once. Must not have went thru. I had just made FN several months before the fire. My 2 year stay was up shortly after that fire. I worked in the NDT lab. Appreciate you asking!

Goosebumps. I was USS Henry Clay Gold Crew from 82-86, refitted at site one. Don't remember it ever being that pretty, but this brings back a ton of memories. Sad to see the pier falling apart. Walked that pier a bunch of times.

Thank you for posting my friend! It is a real treat to be able to see the Holy Loch, Sandbank and the surrounding hillside again. I was barely 18 when I served on the USS Holland back in 1980. This placed is magic! and I have those memories for a lifetime.

Walked that pier at least 1500+ times. U.S.S. Holland AS-32 Nov. '78--Aug. '80 ADP S-7 Div..The "World's Greatest Tender", YNFB-31 (Garrison - Support/ Material), and ASDB-7 Los Alamos.(auxiliary floating drydock)..Between 1961 and 1992, Holy Loch was the site of the United States Navy's Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) Refit Site One. It was the home base of Submarine Squadron (SUBRON) 14, part of Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet. I love the duty there on the Holland. Loved the place. The best little country in the world - Scotland, UK.

My first duty station 80-81. USS Holland AS-32 and the Barge. Drove small boats before I became a cook. Loved it all

We have a few things in common bud. I too was stationed on the Holland 80 to 82 and drove the LCM-6 LCM-8 Back and forth to de pier. We probably even knew each other back then.

Stationed there 1986-87 and rode Hunley back to states. Got to go back a couple years later. Scotland is a beautiful country. We worked way too hard on the Hunley. There wasn't as much liberty time as we wanted but the people and the country will always be special to me.

wow!! great video! i was stationed on the Holland 1979-81,, brings back memories,, especially the Shore Patrol / M.O.D. shacks,, it's a shame all the buildings (bowling alley, EM clubs etc... ) couldn't be used for something,, but .. times change...

Very nice. Interesting site too. But do bear in mind that access is *not* limited. Under Scottish law, the right to roam includes fields like this. As long as you do no damage, and don't frighten the ponies, you may enter at your will.

Some captions would be nice as there is no soundtrack - silent films had captions !
