It has nothing to do with being fair or unfair. The Mercator projection has more realistic sizes for all countries near the equator. All countries near the north and south poles are stretched due to the nature of the projection. It is not possible to perfectly project a 3D object (like a globe) into a 2D surface (a map).

It's not wrong, it's being used incorrectly. People don't understand what those Mercator projection maps are for or how to interpret them. All flat maps are 'wrong' because you can't accurately depict the surface of a sphere on a plane without some manipulation.

I saw a girl with a tattoo on her back once, where the artist had puzzled the parts of the latter map into a equal area world map that didn't look like complete crap. Of course it required some artistic freedom but still the best flat depiction of the continents I have seen. What suffered was the oceans, the distances were very much off.

How do I unmerge that file into individual bands? I wanted to stack multiple scanned png maps of the same area and having the exact same dimensions, the more georeferece all of them as one single file then later export each individual map as a georefereced geotiff file instead of georeferencing each map one by one

Did one of you ever question if africans were/are taught this in school ? And I mean normal children not the sons and daughters of riches in Africa who go to expensive schools. Just normal african children, in normal public schools. Then if you find out that they were never taught this in school, ask yourself why. And try to see how it has impacted their minds and view as africans. Now maybe you'll see why so many youth of our countries cannot imagine a better life in their countries. They think that it's impossible, it cannot and will never happen. They cannot even dream about it. Because yea the dream is only for Europe and the US. Yes you'll understand why our youth just want to seek a better life in your countries...when their countries are much much bigger, with more and more natural resources and riches that even the big multinationals from the west haven't yet found about. I would Like to generate some TCI, VCI, SAVI, WSVI, TVDI maps for my study region, which is positioned between three Landsat scenes. Which method suits: 1) compute TCI, VCI, SAVI, WSVI, TVDI for each Landsat scenes and then mosaic or 2) Mosaic bands separately and then performed TCI, VCI, SAVI, WSVI, TVDI

For three consecutive Landsat scenes, I suggest if you use a much simpler tool 'merge' raster in QGIS. Unless there is cloud cover around edges it will simlessly merge your scenes and you can calculate any of these indices.

There is no “real” 2D map of the globe. 2D can’t physically recreate a 3D object without distortions.
