The place where I live has nesting pair of barn owls on farm each year. But sadly the two large fields wich it hunts on have been ploughed over and was rough grassland. Wich barn owls like. They are not attracted to over farmedland. Also the meadow has been ploughed over . I used to spend hours watching them quartering the rough grass land. They still come on but go further field to hunt. Putting up nest boxes is only the start they also have to have plenty of fields and hedges to hunt along as well. And they do have a liking for old stone derelict buildings. Every where I go now along farms land where there are barn owls. The areas of rough grassland seem to be getting smaller.

Do you know big the field with voles and mice needs to be in average that it provides enough food for the owl and its family? I want to set up a nest box at the edge of a small city. I am not if the designated field is big enough.
