Felicitaciones, Dr. Arbelaez.

This video is impressive. I am struggling to deploy a sparse testing R code to allocate lines in a sparsity way. Is there a contact of the person who presented about sparse testing in this seminar? Thanks,

This is Damaris Odeny from ICRISAT. I had signed up to attend the Town Hall but got other emergencies and therefore could not attend. I enjoyed listening to the recording and understanding the proposed programs. ICRISAT has developed a lot of publicly available genomics datasets, which we continue to share with several of our partners, especially the national programs. We are strongly involved in several of the global initiatives, including ILCI, where we strongly support the breeding and genomics of the national programs. Great to see these efforts and looking forward to being part of these initiatives - in whatever capacity.

Hello, I was involved in another zoom meeting. I have listened to the video, but my concern is that the National systems are ot carried along. Thanks

Thanks Mohammed - it's top priority to work with the national systems and we view all the work as efforts to build the CGIAR-NARES breeding system. We'll make sure we strengthen that message - thanks for the feedback.

If we compare the yield of several accessions over 6 years, then we conclude that some accessions have 12% more yielding then other, is that called genetic gain?
@bharathichunduri2475
@bharathichunduri2475 3 ай бұрын
As far as I study, yield gain is different from genetic gain as yield gain can be obtained even through improved agronomic practices and other factors. whereas genetic gain should involve selection.

Interesting video. A few years ago I had the opportunity to look at the company in Zamarte with breeders from the Netherlands. I breed on a hobby scale myself and I also show some of that on my channel.

This is an excellent video in many different ways especially because the one-way communication of the ideal scene resulted in emotional blowback due to the very large gap existing in the local economy/culture between the communicated ideal scene and what actually existed in the local area. I was impressed with the expertise being communicated (although it was one-way) as well as how the lecturer handled the passionate reaction. My hat is off to the man that pointed out the gap between what existed and what was being proposed. Collaboration involves both speaking and listening, otherwise one ends up growing tomatoes for hippos as Ernesto Sirolli has recounted in his TED speech. It sounds like a good start was made to get at the reality of the existing scene. The lecturer sounded like a man very willing to listen. I hope he got lots of feedback and received a lot of data from this year's planting operations.

This is a good start. It's a bit unordered but it allows an interested person a fly on the wall glimpse of what goes on and would be a good exercise for interested people with a coach/mentor that knew a full yearly cycle of operations in detail. I would like to see something like this accessible to aspiring young plant breeders and technicians in a digital collaboration tool like MIRO. I know from personal experience that there are several points in a yearly cycle of operations in maize breeding where it is very important for plant breeders and technicians to be in full communication regarding what is being done or there will be a mistake made that could destroy a year or more of work. I would like to see big sticky notes for IN-FIELD DATA COLLECTION, Post Harvest data collection, collation of data, database input, Statistical Analyses Reports as well as GENETICS LAB WORK data and results. CIMMYT recorded a man's story about getting a plant breeder to help with weeding that brings out some points about working team culture and maybe even benefits of cross-training staff. Sometimes discoveries are made because of something a plant breeder sees while hoeing/thinning or making up seed to be planted. I am trying, on an amateur hobby basis, to create a virtual maize breeding facility based on working experience I had several decades ago and I am finding it very hard to find public information on operational details even in University libraries. Once in a while I stumble across papers or books like 'Confined Production Processes for Non-food Corn' by Paul J. Christensen with flow charts but they are very few and far between and probably proprietary. It would be nice if spomeone created a detailed 7 division organization board and Hat write-ups (job details, description, yearly cycle steps, tips, etc.) for each post for each crop. There were some nice mindmaps of production cycles for various crops years ago in CGIAR's online Semi-Arid Tropical Crops Academy. I don't know if CGIAR or CIMMYT have created corporate/organizational databases of experts talking about their work, but I would love to find out that someone was working on an ExTRA (Experts Telling Relevant Advice) system with Socratic Arts in the United States or a local affiliate. I could tell the story of how we lost our entire bean nursery to nematodes because we planted it where a well-fertilized maize yield trial test was planted the year before. Basically, we created a rootworm banquet/feast with lots of urea and starter NPK, Zn, fertilizer in the aisles/pathways.

You depicted accuracy as h2 in the formula of R however in the visualization of you are plotting Y as accuracy against heritability h2. Is this h2 and accuracy have common notation or they are same.
@giovannycovarrubias-pazara5628
@giovannycovarrubias-pazara5628 2 жыл бұрын
Dear Sofi, this is a great question. In the plot you're referring to the x axis represent the plot heritability while in the y axis we have the accuracy shown as the correlation between the true and estimated breeding value (this plot is only possible because in simulation we know the true breeding value). In the QG theory when the response to selection is derived (R), under the simplest scenario of a single record per entry the h2 and accuracy2 are the same. This changes when multiple record are obtained 9as usual is), and then the accuracy is not directly obtained from the h2, instead the accuracy (r) is a function of the h2, the repeatability (correlation between reps), and the number of observations. I hope this helps.
