97 was one of the only 2 years that I went to Glastonbury (94 being the other) - the bad weather and boggy conditions were horrible, but the music lineup amongst all stages was extremely strong, and made me forget how much the conditions sucked - in fact, if I had to choose revisiting the festival in 1997 or visiting it in perfect conditions in the 21st century, I’d choose 97 every time - the spirit of Glastonbury was alive back then - it’s a corporate, middle class, temple of hypocrisy with mostly truly awful music these days
@webm810 күн бұрын
Sure i think you are right, even though wet, it was much better musically than now. They should scale back the festival, make it smaller, less stages but improve the quality. I did hear though that they are having problems finding good bands now-a-days, there just arent the artists? not sure if that is true, they are trying to get Eminem for next year. like he is 25yrs past his sell by date
@MiniLemmy10 күн бұрын
@@webm8 see, that’s the problem too - Eminem is not what I consider to be keeping with the (old) Glastonbury vibe - too mainstream and typical of a corporate music event The real spirit of Glastonbury was always the alternative music, the indie bands, the bands that want nothing to do with politics - these types of bands don’t want anything to do with Glastonbury anymore because of the hypocrisy of the place - it would be too much like getting booked on a TV chat show or having their music used in a TV advertisement
@webm84 күн бұрын
@@MiniLemmy For sure, I would say that since the daughter took over, it feels like its going in the wrong direction. But it has for a long time before she did take on the festival. It is a great event and maybe they inadvertently created a monster they can no longer control? It is so hard to comment as every generation feels "it was better in my day", and I'm sure the kids there this summer had the best time of their lives. I remmeber the old bands on stage with lots of feedback, the original pyramid stage and you could just walk in with no fence back in the 80s. Maybe you are on to something there, the bigger bands want that ego thing of saying they played at G'bury, while the younger ones are trying to do the opposite? They do have an amazing new bands stage though. I think i would rather go to that tent as its own festival. Hey ho.

Wow... ! That was an eye-opener. Some of us sit in our houses. and wonder how long we can last in this current " cost of living crisis ". Should I find myself in the position of these travellers.. authority will deny my civil rights and treat me with ill-will. Surely the freedoms of the travellers have been grossly abused.. ? In America, that might have turned into a million doller lawsuit.

I can guarantee Beltram didn't expect this to be such a big hit! But I can probably guarantee that Joey wouldn't say this was his best achievement musically 😮.... No! This track was important back then as it had a message. But. Became too commercial. Even back in late 91 I could not bare seeing or hearing this tune as a lot of people missed the point. Go check all music Joey produced! I'm not a personal friend of him. But musically and sonically he was the Mentazm ❤❤❤

Glastonbury 97 was one of the 2 Glastonburys that I did attend (by scaling the fence of course!) - it was one of the last really great Glasto’s despite the boggy conditions because of the rich quality of music across ALL stages, the only bummers that year being the weather and clashing quality band performance times - the fact that I barely remember the weather being a testament to how great the whole event was
