I rode one of the trips to Front Royal in 1988. In the spring of 1989; I was hired on by the NS Steam Locomotive Department. Learned a lot while I was there. 1218 is a beautiful machine. 611 is as well. Saw her last week at Strasburg.

N&W 1218 was very enjoyable to observe operating in excursion service being one example of a handful of operating articulated steam locomotives post steam era. The 1218 had an excursion service career of only four years (1987-1991), I am glad that this engine still exists but it's a shame that the NS steam program had the operating financial issues that they did.

Why do people in Norfolk notice this coal dust video from Cassandra, PA? Because we have been fighting with Norfolk Southern for decades over coal dust. And we've sent these videos around you can be sure. This coal on uncovered cars pollutes like heck, and that continues when it arrives in Norfolk. It's loaded onto ships at the Lamberts Point coal loading facility using uncovered rotary dumpers. The billows coal dust near neighborhoods, people, homes, cars, and air. Their old equipment is exempt from the clean air act, and every 5 years or so citizens rise up and protest. Videos exist of this, newspaper coverage and all of it. They moved their headquarters to Atlanta, Ga about a year ago. To see the CEO of NS on TV at the hearings and at the town hall in East Palestine is enough to make one throw up. NS doesn't care about anyones safety-just their bottom line-and are shameless. Shameless.

Nice video. Rode behind the 1218 in 1988. Went to the passenger station in Alexandria late the night before the excursion to watch it arrive. Thrilling anticipation and then to finally hear that whistle in the distance and then finally see the approaching headlight. Shot video of the ride and the run by but some a**hole friend of mine recorded over it.

Have you ever watched coal burn? It turns colors. It puts out amazing heat. It burns a long time. I see why people all over the world used it in their basement furnaces for so many years.

Don't know if you are still monitoring your channel and comments, this many years later, but you did an excellent job on this video! Probably the best day I ever had in my life was a trip to Farmville and Crew, Va. in 1958 chasing N&W steam engines and getting up in the cab of one while stopping at Crew! Again, thanks for an amazing job!

This video brings back memories. My grandfather was a yard conductor. When I was a kid he'd take me from Acca to Potomac Yard for fun. We'd hop an engine up and spend a day in DC then hop a train back. Boy was that fun for a kid. I used to love little yard engine 91
@pmrailfan75214 жыл бұрын
Railfanned the F'Burg part of the line. Like you, i would spend whole days 'down at the tracks'. The only time Id get to wave at #91 (and #89 too I think) was when she was sandwiched betwixt two RF&P GP's. (If Im not mistaken, they wore road trucks and beared different coupler shanks as well, for faster than 'switching' type service.) Being a kid just learning the intricate details of Railroading, I just couldn't fathom a yard switcher doing better than 50mph! The end of the day would be the NB local out of FBurg. for Alex.. 1 GP40, 40 cars, slight grade northward off the Rappahannock. She'd growl, howl, scratch, and claw her way, but shed make it! Youd hear her back off by Potomac creek, then fade back to everyday sounds of life. Then back home by dark.

What is also wonderful is that the steamer is, this time, the sole motive power .. There's no 'cheater diesel' behind her showing that sort of 'mistrust' in the star's ability to perform the entire show. That's really cool !....Dig ?
