I absolutely intend to make more of these and at varying skill levels. I'm glad you liked it. I wasn't sure if being this detailed would make it boring. I'm a bit happily surprised that this video is getting more views than my normal build video of the same bed.

I have to say I liked both versions of this video. I can't wait to see what is next

It's an interesting experiment for me. I don't know of anyone doing anything like these video woodworking plans. Making all the illustrations is quite a bit more work then just telling a few stories along the way, but if I see even one person make a similar bed, I'll be happy with it. I'll try to make a few of these that aren't quite so complicated too.

For those of us who weren't lucky enough to grow up in a family like yours, do you have any suggestions about where to start learning woodworking?
@AlpineTrailsStudio19 күн бұрын
Hi. I like the question. KZbin is a great place to learn things, but it's better as a supplement than a single source. I think the best way to learn woodworking is through experience. Now, I have tens of thousands of dollars worth of tools and equipment, and I think that is the kind of investment you would have to work to once you know you really love the craft. So I would suggest looking around your community. There are often community shop spaces that will let you use the tools either for a time based fee or through classes that they offer. If you can do this, you might find something you really enjoy and can start with the tools to make whatever that is. Here's a Short video that I did of a project I often use to teach people the basics of the shop if I only have them for an hour or two: kzbin.infob8sGeT2ZbMQ?feature=share

I love this video. I love that it talks about wood working and using lasers (they shouldn’t be either or). I also love the end…. Getting paid for what you are worth and it isn’t possible with all products. I have found it very challenging to consider cost and time. I do not have your wood working skills but LOVE the idea of adding lasers as a tool.

Oh, just a bit more: The last box (the painted one) would be very special if the top piece was complete engraving with no wood edge.
@AlpineTrailsStudio27 күн бұрын
There's no paint on any of these boxes. Technically it's not engraved either. The laser cuts completely through the material. I could take that cut to the edge, or more likely I would take it very close to the edge and then cut the edge off, but then I would have to glue a bottom onto it. It would be an interesting challenge to try and make it a waterfall design, but I do think it stands up well as it is.
@wood4me28 күн бұрын
Why not try this: Cut (erase) all joining edges, only half the thickness on what will be the inside of the box. Then when glued together, you finish up with straight edges. The roses appear to be simple to machine yet they finish up beautifully.

Now all we need is somebody to invent a way to get rid of the black cut marks and do 45% cuts where the corners meet. My wife was at a market the other day and there were plenty of very nice designs she said, but all had the same black cut marks and the same way of corner joining. She said the items for sale was more suitable for the "pedestrian buyer on a budget" rather than an exclusive or very well made item suited for her home, whatever all that means, lol!
@AlpineTrailsStudioАй бұрын
I completely agree. As I mention in the video, the first box looks like all the crafts you see from laser cutter crafters selling at a market. The second box is an improvement where the box joints are no longer seen and the carbon marks are visible only on the lid and base. The third box I think solves all of the problems you mention and all lasering marks are hidden. I wonder what your wife would think if she saw my final box at a market. I'm actually quite curious what that kind of box would sell for.

I really like the idea here. I have bought a few plans that were downright tough to work with. I'm too cheap to buy the expensive plans though. Maybe you kind of get what you pay for? I have to say though, since you are such a talented wood worker you could pretty easily figure out most of it. I would really be curious how this would go for someone with either no experience or someone like me with less than a years worth of experience. Still enjoyed the video. Keep them coming.
@AlpineTrailsStudio2 ай бұрын
This is a fantastic question, and I'm really going to try to avoid writing an essay in a KZbin comment. Someone with zero experience in woodworking would struggle on all of these plans. It would probably be better to take a class or two first. In the end, plans are an attempt to transfer ideas from one person to another. The more shared experience those two people have, the easier that transfer will be. At one year experience, I think the best plan out of all of these would be the Scott Walsh plan. The idea was creative, but the tools and techniques needed to build it were not complex. Add that the plan was highly detailed, and you have a recipe for success. The Katz-Moses plan had a similar level of detail, but I had a bit of a discussion about how complex a build it was in my original cut of the video that I had to take out for time. If you haven't done a good bit of routing and building from templates, that one would be really tricky. The other two were cabinets, and I have built a zillion cabinets, so I was able to work around problems and lack of detail in the plans without too much trouble, where at an earlier experience level I may have had a lot more frustration. I think it is like anything else. Pick your projects (and thus your plans) based on your assessment of your skill and maybe just push yourself a small bit at a time.

Try covering your the backing board with parchment paper. It won't stick to epoxy. You can use a chef's torch to eliminate bubbles in your pour.
